Biography

Htalui Mersagi was born March 12th, 1956 in the rural town of Deirdre into one of the wealthier families of the region. He was sent to a private school in Bari Nazer and had not much contact with his family.

Starting in 1974, he studied Historical Diplomacy and Politology at the renowned University of Ωn-Baranxiž. He graduated in 1979, becoming the first member of his family with a university degree.

In 1978, he became engaged to Luria Naidilatu Semira. They married in 1981 and moved to the capital, where Htalui Mersagi worked as a journalist for the Baranxtuan Weekly Review.

Today, he lives with his wife and his four younger children (Argenia (b. 1980), Hmargi (b. 1982), Eudi (b. 1985), Oleinia and Suldira (b. 1986), Ggelia (1992)) in the outskirts of Ωn-Baranxiž.

Political Career

After the Nabisma Scandal of 1984 (Odela Negrata Nabisma member of parliament was found out to use her budget to pay for private flights), Htalui Mersagi decided to become active in politics. He became a member of the Party for the Union of all People of the Republic.

He quickly became known for his hardliner attitude towards corrupt politicians and was put into the electoral list during the National Election of 1988 and, though albeit a bit surprisingly, gained enough support to actually gain entry into parliament.

His popularity grew, and in 1997, he was elected head of his party with the support of the then-Prime Minister Uruana Malenatu Sengara.

When she suddenly died in 1999, one year before the next national elections, Htalui Mersagi was elected Prime Minister, thus also becoming the youngest prime minister of Baranxtu ever at the age of 41. During the national election, his party gained even more seats, and he could continue his term in office.

He was also re-elected in 2004, but he has recently announced that he would not run for a third term. He said he had already reached most of his career goals and now wanted to spend more time with his family, especially with his new-born grandchildren, the twin daughters of his eldest daughter Argenia.

In June 2006, he dismissed two members of his cabinet, namely Adánela Heftúea and Aimala Boulea, which ultimately led to him loosing a motion of confidence. King Ateni subsequently dissolved the parliament, leading to the 2006 elections, in which Mersagi - as announced - did not run.
