The Imperial Race

The Nation of teh Imperial Race has been in turmoil recently. after so many civil wars the military finally seized power. They have formed the Imperialist-Nationalist Party and they are incontrol of all of North and South America, southern Africa, Australiia, New Zealand, New Guinea all of the polar regions and the paciffic Islands. It is at a near constant war with Tetris L-Shaped Block and so many people have begun an intestese hatred of the Block.

Founding of the Imperial Race

After the Geo-terrorist wars of 2015 The Former United States of America was drained and unable to protect her assetes and so they where forced to withdrawl all of their forces to protect the homeland. It Was a veteran of the Wars named George Blackfield that seized power in the Coup of 2020. He was declared the Dictator of all the states and renamed his nation. Oceania of the Imperial Race. He had a policy in order to defeat terrorists we must control a where they operate. So he whent on a massive campaign of Expansion he conqured Canada, South America, the Pacific islands, Australlia, New Zeland, New Guinea and the United Kingdom.

Internal Strusture

General Blackfield had read the bood "1984" and began to turn his state into one like that of Oceania. He had already conqured the areas and so the Imperialist-Nationalist Party began to beknown as just the party. Signs Quoteing big brother appeared and the minisrtiers that where used in the book became reality. And General George Blackfield became known as Big Brother. The main difference between Oceania and The Empire is that it is an Ultra Capitalistic State. THe Party is only open to the Military and the Rich. Every one Else is forced to work for little pay and That the Ministry of Plenty doesn't exist.

Ministries

Ministry of Peace- Concerns itself with conducting and perpetuating The Imperial Race's peace through continuous wars.

Ministry of Truth- The propaganda arm of General Blackfield's regime. It controls political literature, the Party organisation, and the telescreens.

Ministry of Love- The agency responsible for the identification, monitoring, arrest, and torture of dissidents, real or imagined. Responsible for making every Party member love the Party.

The Party

The mysterious head of government is the omniscient, omnipotent, beloved Big Brother, or "B.B.", usually displayed on posters with the slogan "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". Big Brother acts as a focus for the love of the Party which the Thought Police and others are there to engender. It is perfectly possible that the conflict between Big Brother and Goldstein is in fact a conflict either between two fictitious or two dead leaders, whose true purpose is to personify both the Party and its opponents.

His political opponent is the hated Emmanuel Goldstein, a Party member who had been in league with Big Brother and the Party during the revolution. Goldstein is said to be a major part of the Brotherhood, a vast underground anti-Party fellowship. The reader never truly finds out whether the Brotherhood exists or not, but the implication is that Goldstein is either entirely fictitious or was eliminated long ago. Party members are expected to vilify Goldstein and the Brotherhood via the daily "two minute hate." During this ritual citizens are expected to ridicule and shout at a video of the hated "bleating" Goldstein expounding his alternative philosophy (indeed, the image ultimately morphed into a bleating sheep).

The three slogans of the Party, on display everywhere, are:

WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Each of these is of course either contradictory or the opposite of what we normally believe, and the world is in a state of constant war, no one is free, and everyone is ignorant. The slogans are analyzed in Goldstein's book. Through their constant repetition, the terms become meaningless, and the slogans become axiomatic. This type of misuse of language, and the deliberate self-deception with which the citizens are encouraged to accept it, is called doublethink.

One essential consequence of doublethink is that the Party can rewrite history with impunity, for "The Party is never wrong." The ultimate aim of the Party is to gain and retain full power over all the people of The World.

The Military

The military consitists of 300 million solidiers. They follow old Soviet Tank tactics and have invested in a Soviet Style Military. Victory through mumbers and Simplicity outdoes Technology. The Military is constatnly improving the old Soviet Designs and makieing them Better. The Military is battle Hardened and all sit infear of the Party Guard. These are the Elite from every branch of the Military and act as guards and shock troops.

NewSpeak

Newspeak is closely based on English but has a greatly reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar. This suited the totalitarian regime of the Party, whose aim was to make subversive thought ("thoughtcrime") and speech impossible.

The Newspeak term for the existing English language was Oldspeak. Oldspeak was supposed to be completely eclipsed by Newspeak by 2050.

The basic idea behind Newspeak was to remove all shades of meaning from language, leaving simple dichotomies (pleasure and pain, happiness and sadness, good thoughts and thoughtcrimes) which reinforce the total dominance of the State. A staccato rhythm of short syllables was also a goal, further reducing the need for deep thinking about language.

In addition, words with opposite meanings were removed as redundant, so "bad" became "ungood." Words with similar meanings were also removed, so "best" became "doubleplusgood." In this manner, as many words as possible were removed from the language. The ultimate aim of Newspeak was to reduce even the dichotomies to a single word that was a "yes" of some sort: an obedient word with which everyone answered affirmatively to what was asked of them.

Some of the constructions in Newspeak, such as replacing "bad" with "ungood", are in fact characteristic of agglutinative languages, although foreign to English. It is possible that some aspects of Newspeak are modelled specifically on Esperanto; for example "ungood" is constructed similarly to the Esperanto word "malbona".

The underlying theory of Newspeak is that if something can't be said, then it can't be thought. One question raised by this is whether we are defined by our language, or whether we actively define it. For instance, can we communicate the need for freedom, or organise an uprising, if we do not have the words for either? This is related to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, and Ludwig Wittgenstein's proposition, "The limits of my language mean the limits to my world."

Examples of Newspeak, from the novel, include: "crimethink"; "doubleplusungood"; and "Ingsoc." They mean, respectively: "thought-crime"; "extremely bad"
