Founding
The Most Serene Republic of Murkadia was actually founded as a colony of Russia in the Territories of the Borderlands region. Over time, ties with the mother country weakened as Murkadia became far more closely linked to the surrounding nations both economically and politically. A period of unrest back in Russia gave Murkadia the opportunity to declare indepence without firing a shot.
The People
For the most part, Murkadians have rejected Russian political and economic systems completely while holding on to many of the religious and cultural aspects of their Russian heritage. To this day Eastern Orthodox is the most dominate religion and the Russian language is the official language of the nation. The people have devoted themselves to creating a democratic society in which each person is able to fail or succeed based on their own merits in a rather cutthroat capitalistic economy.
Government
The government is run by a Prime Minister elected by the Parliament for indefinite periods of time. A vote of no confidence in the Parliament will bring about elections for a new Prime Minister at any time. The Prime Minister and their cabinet essentially run the nation. Parliament controls the laws of the nation, but the Prime Minister can exert quite a bit of power on his own in this area through Executive Orders (which can in turn be overriden by the Parliament). Members of Parliament are elected every 4 years in single member district pluralities.
The following parties dominate Murkadia's Parliament:
- Nationalist Party (~38% of seats) *
- Green Murkadia Party (~31% of seats)
- Free Markets Party (~21% of seats) *
- Russian Party (~6% of seats)
- Independent/Other (~3% of seats)
