The Estado Novo of El Caudillo is a plutocratic, rigily authoritarian, militantly anticommunist, puritanical right-wing monarchy with strong theocratic leanings. Ruled by Emperor Anastasio VI, who was crowned emperor by Pope Pius XIII after achieving victory in the El Caudillan Civil War, El Caudillo is one of the most tightly-controlled nations in the world. PIDE agents prowl every city street, video cameras watch every public area, and 25 feet tall, 10,000-volt electric fences topped with barbed wire and billions of hidden land mines prevent the intrusion of unwelcome persons. El Caudillo expends enormous sums of cash on defense and law enforcement. The government shows zero tolerance for dissent; even the mildest criticism of the government can result in being house arrested, banned, detained in a re-education camp, imprisoned, or even exiled or executed. Portuguese and Spanish are the official languages and Roman Catholicism is the state religion, though other faiths are tolerated. Virtually all books, movies, etc. with liberal or left-leaning themes are banned, and even the Russian language is outlawed.
