Overview
The Armed Republic of Astereon is a small, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 8 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."
The medium-sized, corrupt, moralistic government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 19%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Trout Farming, and Retail industries.
Elections have been outlawed, citizens are barcoded to keep track of their movements, and Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Astereon's national animal is the White Tiger and its currency is the Bing.
