Overview
The Armed Republic of Astereon is a huge, safe nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its cynical population of 219 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."
The enormous, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Education. The average income tax rate is 31%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Automobile Manufacturing, and Retail industries.
The mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, gambling is outlawed, teachers regularly paddle unruly students, and a crusade against barbaric religious practices has begun. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Astereon's national animal is the White Tiger, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Bing.
