The Holy Empire of Qarez is a large, safe nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its compassionate, hard-working, cynical population of 20 million are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.
The medium-sized, corrupt, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Commerce. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 8%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Automobile Manufacturing industry, followed by Gambling and Basket Weaving.
It is illegal to make racist remarks in public, organ donation rates are among the lowest in the region, meat-eating is frowned upon, and school uniforms are compulsory. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Qarez's national animal is the scorpion, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the dollar.
