Adalese presidential election, April 2006

The first round of the Adalese presidential election in April 2006 was held 8 April, 2006, and the second round on 15 April, 2006 between Påval Hindenskjöld and Sonja Burgenstein, because none of the candidates recieved over a half of the votes. Hindenskjöld defeated Burgenstein with a minimal marginal, although the turnout was also relatively low.

The election became needed as federal president Jude Bjärnesson resigned after merely two months in office. Most of the candidates are same as at the presidential election in February, 2006. The leader of the Liberal Party Anders Lindén did not apply for candidacy for financial reasons; the party could not afford a new campaign in such a short time. Also the Communists did not have their own candidate, but supported the Social Democrat candidate Reidar Finnehammar. The leader of the Poor People's Party of Adal Ecke Berg run for the presidency as the only new candidate.

On the first round, turnout was 71.3 and a total of 41,354,000 votes were given. The second round was accidentally placed on Easter Saturday, so most of the voters were not home at the time of the election, even though by the law voting has to take place in the district where the voter resides. Thus, the turnout was only 51.7 %, which is very low even for the Adalese who normally are lazy voters. The low turnout has caused lots of speulation. Only 21,380,018 votes were given in the second round.

Candidate numbers were raffled by the Ministry of Justice on 1 April, 2006. By the law, there is no number one in use.
