Summary
The Republic of Adam Island is a huge, socially progressive nation, renowned for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 247 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
The medium-sized government juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 18%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Book Publishing, Pizza Delivery, and Trout Farming industries.
Nervous homeowners have been blamed for rising death rates amongst carol singers and locksmiths, abortions are routinely performed in Adam Island's hospitals, military funding has been stripped back, and parents live in fear of governmental 'child protection' squads. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is moderate, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Adam Island's national animal is the Llama, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Jay.
Government
Adam Island was once a monarchy, but the forward-thinking rulers made plans to transfer over to Democratic rule. The four major parties were extremely close in the first election, but the Libertarian Party of Adam Island has a slim pluralty.

The Republic of Adam Island is divided into 9 territories, each with its own governor and local authorities. They also elect one justice to the Supreme Court. The frequency of elections is determined by local authorities.
The President of Adam Island is elected every three years, by a simply pluralty popular vote. The President has the power to approve or veto legislation that comes from Parliament and the power to appoint ambassadors, diplomats and delegates to international governments.
Parliament is elected simply as well. It is a unicameral body, with 100 members. Seats are awarded proportionally based on party vote. Only legislation that they approve can be signed by the President. They have no power of veto override or impeachment.
History
For centuries, the Island was ruled by royalty. Once foriegn involvement in Island affairs grew, many citizens saw the benefits of a democratic society. The royalty realized this too, and called for elections and individual liberties, peacefully establishing The Republic of Adam Island.
In the interim between the royal rule and the new democracy, noted pro-Democracy Libertarian Party leader and distant relative of the royal family, Adam C. Roberts took the reins.
Parties
Libertarian Party
The Libertarian Party of Adam Island is the ruling party in the Republic. They control the Presidency, and have the most seats in the Parliament and on the Supreme Court.
Adam C. Roberts, the Interim Ruler during the transition between the Monarcy to Democracy was the leader of the Libertarian Party. President Ben Rodriquez, former Governor of East Island, now commands the post of President.
They support all civil liberties as well as economic liberties. They are militarily non-interventionist, and very pro-democracy. They also try and work with world governments and alliances.
Neo-Royalist Party
The Neo-Royalists are citizens who desire a return to the monarcy. They feel it was a mistake to move towards Democracy, as it will destabilize the country and allow unqualified leaders. Many of them are those who feel that the regime that handed over power to the people stole the throne in the first place.
They are moderate on economic and civil freedoms. Their leader is Lord Philliburn Sebastian.
Mercantilist
The Mercantilist Party is also very pro-democracy and pro-civil liberties. It is the second largest party in the Republic. However, they support a large welfare state and high taxes. They recieve a lot of support from the large corporations throughout the country, due to their promises of subsidies and tarriffs. Their leader is Vincent Taylor.
Values
The values leader is Dhammadharo, a Fundamentalist Island Buddhist. Fundamentalist Island Buddhism has a violent apocalyptic undertone to many of the teachings.
The Values Party is for the government enforcement of religious values and seeks to stomp out secularism.
Sports
Baseball
Baseball has long been considered Adam Island's #1 National Game. The Adam Island Baseball League (AIBL) was organized in 1985 and is seperated into 2 divisions, East and West, of 6 teams each. They play a 162-game schedule, concluding with the Adam Series between the two division winners. The season begins in late March or early April and finishes in late September or early October. The Adam Series is always played in October.
Football (Soccer)
Although the game of football proper came to Adam Island only one short decade ago when the royals opened up the Island's ports to new immigrants, evidence of various foot-and-ball games dates back twelve thousand years. When the standardized rules of football and the liberalization of the market met the Island, the game quickly evolved into a million jay enterprise, with schoolchildren's parents purchasing huge quantities of footballs, jerseys and equipment.
Seeing football as a way to unite the divided populace, President Ben Rodriquez announced the formation of the National Football Organization, (funded entirely by private sponsors) and set for it the first task of assembling a National Team to compete in World Cup XIX and the preceding Baptism of Fire tournament. Adam Island is currently ranked 90th in the world and won 3rd place in their Baptism of Fire.
The Adam Island Football Association (AIFA)is grouped into 42 teams in 4 divisions with 10 teams each, and 2 affiliate teams. At the end of each season, the top 2 teams in each division move up one and the bottom 2 teams move down one. The top 32 teams also play in the Adma Cup. The season begins in March and ends in August.

Religion
According to the latest national survey, 76% of Adam Islanders follow one form or another of Island Buddhism, 21% are non-religious, 2 % belong to an underground religion known as Orbisim, and 1% follow other various beliefs.
Corporations
Adam Island's laissez-faire business policies have attracted numerous corporations, with few able to build up a semi-consistant monopoly. Labor unions are strong and yield great influence. Adam Islanders express rabid brand loyalty. Adam-Cola once ran an ad featuring a man wandering in the desert, dying of thirst. He came across another traveler, who offered him a drink from one of Adam-Cola's rivals, Dr. Adam. The man refused because he would never drink a beverage like that. The ad was pulled after several stories came up of this actually happening to Adam Islanders.
News Media
The two largest news media outlets in the country are The Adam Island Times and The Adam Island Network. The Times is the largest newspaper, and tends to concentrate on domestic political issues. The Network focuses mostly on television broadcasting, especially in sports, but its internet paper rivals the Times in circulation. Adam Islanders debate over which outlet is less biased, but the general consensus is that the Times is highly critical of the Libertarian Administration, while the Network favors internationalism and civil liberties.
Calendar
The Adam Island calendar year began in 1984, the year the monarchs officially handed power over to the democratic government. It runs on the standard Julian calendar adopted by most NationStates. There is, however, no exact speed at which it runs at compared to the 'real-life' calendar. The best way to learn the current date in Adam Island is to visit either the Times or the Network and view the tagline on the most recent article.
