The Kingdom of Addisumbria, or simply Addisumbria, is a small but wealthy constitutional monarchy in the East Pacific region. Addisumbria is, by United Nations standards, a moralistic democracy in the sense that the general population is very socially conservative and the laws of the land reflect that conservatism.

History

Addisumbria, which means "land of the sons of Adam," was founded in AD 1598, by a separatist movement that led a revolt against Derisett, of which Addisumbria was a part. This rift, sparked largely by social differences, resulted in the formation of a new kingdom.

The Royal Family of Addisumbria first came into being in 1597, one year prior to independence, when then-Governor Brodi declared himself king and established his family, the Ballinger's, as the Royal Bloodline. The throne has been controlled by three royal families since King Brodi established Addisumbria. The current royal family, the Bonnett Family, has been in control for nearly 150 years.

Addisumbria has generally been a peace-loving nation, though it has been involved in four wars, all of which it was on the winning side. The nation rose to new levels of prosperity in the last century, spurred on by the Uranium Mining Industry and the Financial Services Sector.

The current Monarch is Derek I, born Derek Addison Bonnett. He is the youngest monarch in Addisumbrian history, at 19, and one of the most popular, with an approval rating of 87% (contrasting his predecessor, King Addison VI's, 25% approval rating).

Geography

Addisumbria is a small island nation. It's total land area is 21,376 square miles. It is renowned for its stark beauty and barren, windswept mountains in the south. The highest point is Mt. Matthew (5,673 feet). The most important and largest river is the Brodi River, which flows north into King's Bay at Brodi.

Politics and Government

Addisumbria is a constitutional monarchy, meaning it has a king but also a constitution that limits the powers of the king. Addisumbria has a unicameral parliament consisting of 30 representatives (6 from each of the 5 dukedoms, or provinces). The two-party system keeps government in balance. The two dominant parties are currently the Conservative Party (19-seat majority) and the People's Progress Party (11-seat minority). Elections are held every two years for provincial representatives. A Prime Minister is appointed by the king to be head of state and oversee Parliamentary proceedings. Traditionally, the Prime Minister is a member of the majority party in Parliament, though this has not always been the case. The Prime Minister (or the Monarch in rare instances) cast the tie-breaking vote in Parliament.

The current Prime Minister is Adam Reynolds (C). His two-year term expires in May 2008. There is no term limit for Prime Minister.

Religion and Social Issues

The Church of Addisumbria is the official Christian Church of the nation. The King is considered the Patriarch of the Church, though the real authority is vested in the Bishop of Brodi. The Cathedral Church of Addisumbria in Brodi is the Holy See of Addisumbrian Christianity. The church is fairly conservative, but is considered mainline.

Socially, Addisumbria is very conservative. Abortion and gay marriage are illegal. Most other hot topics have not even been brought up.
