The Arta ar Tol Fuina of Ainulindalion

The Fortress and Hidden Isle of Ainulindalion is a extraordinarily tiny nation of immortal humans ruled by a being of unlimited power, Ainulindalion. It plays no role in world affairs voluntarily. The island is approximately circular, and about 10 kilometers in diameter. On all sides of the island, within 50 meters of the water, there is a cliff nearly a kilometer high that levels into a plateau covered in lush forests and grassy fields. Cool lakes dot the area.

A massive castle rests in the exact geographic center of the island, overlooking the single village where the entire population lives. Depending on who is observing the castle it can resemble a blocky fortress of solid obsidian or a dainty fairie castle with spires jutting into the sky. And of course, anything in between. The village is in appearance of late Tudor English construction, and the lives of the people reflect this level of technology. Only the armory of the Protector's Chosen contains anything more advanced than a simple crossbow.

The Protector's Chosen are the military and police force of the Island, numbering an even 100 persons, for Ainulindalion, Steward of the Fortress and Protector of the Hidden Isle is the only military force the island needs, should it ever come under attack. Its primary defense is that it is simply not there. To travel to the Hidden Isle, one must set out for, knowing precisely where it is. Otherwise, it cannot be found.

No one can say how long the Isle has been where it is, or if it has always been where it is now, except for perhaps Ainulindalion, and he's apparently not telling. The Isle has likely been there since the awakening of the Elves, though it is clear it has not been populated since before that time. While the inhabitants are human, they are immortal, contrary to all other humans of Elven Race Division descent, because the humans of the Hidden Isle are not descended of that Race of Man. They were created by Ainulindalion some time after the Race of Man split from the Race of Elves.

Ainulindalion

Language: Quenya

Translation: "Son of the Song of the Holy Ones" "Son of Creation"

Creature, mythical

Usually ascribed godlike powers. Unlike most elements of Elven-lore, little is known. Considering the existence of much of Elven-lore as fact, with the fairly recent return of Melkor, the Vala to the Mortal Plane, the existence of the creature known as Ainulindalion seems doubtful at best, as there is little supporting evidence.

Place, mythical

Also known as The Hidden Isle, this is said to be the home of Ainulindalion. Most elements of the mythology suggest that it is usually represented by a taller, young human male, with deeply tanned skin, dark hair and dark eyes. Usually seen in dark clothing, as well. Myth credits this man with magical powers as well, ranging from conjuring and tricks to nearly godlike. Said to be undefeatable with a blade, or any weapon. Usually named in such as way as to suggest godlike or other higher being status.

Description

Ainulindalion might as well be described as a god. He is in possession of apparently unlimited ability to reshape reality to suit his purposes. He has been in existance for all of time, created in the Song of the Ainur that created the world. His specific origins are a mystery to even the Valar, for none knew what they had sung that might have created him.

For the sake of those he interacts with, Ainulindalion, sometimes also called Balion, usually adopts the form of human being. His form he takes most often is a tall young man, dressed in solid black, wearing a black cape, with black hair and eyes, though he is by no means limited to this form, since his physical form is simply a manifestation of his will. Most often, in those cultures where it is acceptable, he will be seen wearing a sword.

Companions and Familiars

Shadow is the most common companion of Ainulindalion when he is not alone. Shadow is his horse, a mearas, lord of horses, one of the original horses, faster, stronger, and with more endurance than a regular horse. The horse is solid black, not merely the absense of reflected light, but the absense of actual light. The horse is shaped, formed from the shadows that give its name, but is perfectly solid to the touch. Fast enough to outrun the sound of his hooves striking the ground, Shadow never need stop for rest or food. Ainulindalion always rides Shadow barebacked, except into combat.

Wolves are the most commonly associated animal with Ainulindalion. They are not hunted on the Hidden Isle, though those living on the island pose no threat to the humans there.

Backstory and Purpose

Not even Ainulindalion knows his true purpose, as to why he was brought into existence. Nothing living does except for Eru, the Supreme Being. With sufficient knowledge of Ainulindalion, it is possible to discern his purpose, on the other hand. His seemingly unlimited power is limited to that which has been created, in less powerful incarnations. He lacks the ability to create something that is completely without precedent. Which, of course, means, that the longer time goes on, the more powerful he becomes. By the end of time, he will be all powerful.

This gives rise to a hint at his purpose. When time ends, Ainulindalion will possess all the abilities of Eru, the Supreme Being, and will survive the ending of time, which will occur when he supplants Eru as Supreme Being. At this point, Ainulindalion will Supreme Being of Nothingness, and as such, will create the new universe to follow the current one. Eru knows this, and is aware of it, being as this is how he came to power at the beginning of the current universe.

By the time elves awoke, and non-divine sentient life came into being in the world, Ainulindalion was powerful enough he was made to swear an oath to Eru. This oath forbid him from taking part in the affairs of the world, of interfering in the natural development of nations and empires, though he is permitted to interact on a personal level with individuals. Mostly this is because he lacks the ability currently to observe the future, though he can shape it, being as it is not yet set, at least from his current perspective. This permits him personal relationships with individuals, though he is to avoid relationships with those individuals who control nations.

Eventually, of course, he will advanced beyond the level where his compliance with his oath can be enforced. Since he does not suspect that he cannot actually be killed at all, and much effort on the divine plane has been put into this illusion for him, though none know it except Eru, he will continue to comply with his oath. At this point, where he can avoid enforcement, it is assumed that time will end, when Ainulindalion replaces Eru as Supreme Being.
