Government
The Federal Republic of Ashlavar's government has three branches including the Judicial, Legislative, and Executive branches. These branches in the Ashlan government are designed to share power, based on Baron de Montesquieu's idea of the balance of powers, so that no one branch can be too powerful.
Legislative
The legislative branch consists of the Ashlan Congress. Ashlavar has a single house congress that consists of 300 congressmen and women (60 for each of the five states). This branch proposes and debates laws, while voting to see if it is allowed to reach the President. The leadership of this branch consists of the Congressional President (who mediates Congressional debate), the Majority leader (the Congressman or woman who is incharge of the majority party), the Minority leader (the Congresman or woman who is incharge of the minority party), and other minor positions that are appointed by the Majority and Minority leaders.
Judicial
The Judicial branch consists of all courts within Ashlavar, weather local, state, or federal. All of which, except local (which only has courts of law), have both constitutional courts and courts of law. Constitutional courts only hear cases that question the constitutionality of a law while courts of law convict criminals.
Executive
This branch consists of the President and his staff who lead the nation. The President may veto bills and propose bills of his or her own into congress.
Political Parties and Elections
The Federal Republic of Ashlavar has a staunch two party system. The two major parties are the Conservative-Libertarian Party and the Progressive Party.
Elections are as follows:
President: Every 5 years without term limits
Congress: Every 4 years without term limits
The Federal Constitutional Court: Appointed by President and must be approved by Congress - No re-elections needed and life long appointment.
Governor: Varies by state
Mayor: Varies by state requirements and local requirements.
Society
The Federal Republic of Ashlavar consists of five different states that enjoy lots of leway to do as they please, but not enough for Ashlavar to be considered a Confederacy. The Government's purely capitalist stance on business, industry, and trade are prehaps what Ashlavar is most noted (and often frowned uppon) for. Because of the Government's pro-business stance, Ashlavar has almost always enjoyed a very powerful and stable economy.
