The People's Republic of Auroro (Esperanto: La Respubliko Popolamasa de Aûroro) is a small developing country, located in Europe. Formed following a revolution against the regime of the ruling Satrap (Vojevodo) Meander IV the PRA has engaged in a process of rapid modernisation, focusing particularly on the development of its heavy industry. It's capital city is Bajkonoro (formerly Baikonur).

History

Following the collapse of the Ancient Shahist Empire, of which modern Auroro formed an administrative unit, the country was ruled by descendants of the former regional governor as the independent Satrapy of Zarya for several centuries. Although initially characterised by benevolent and just administration, especially under the golden age of Meander II, the Satrapy entered a slow state of economic and moral decline approximately five centuries ago.

By the late twentieth century Zarya was poor, underdeveloped and its government highly corrupt; the Satrap Meander IV lived in opulence while most of the population starved. Following the unsuccessful campaign against the mountain settlements to the south of the country over a tax dispute, Meander's authority and was severely weakened. During this time the Zaryan Worker's Party emerged under the leadership of Alexei Zakharov. Espousing a radical program of economic, social, political and cultural reform, the ZWP was at first heavily suppressed; however, following the suspension of pay to the army due economic collapse this suppression subsided and the ZWP was able to operate in the open.

During this time Meander IV's mental state entered a state of rapid decline, culminating in his execution of the entire military top brass for subversion. Ironically, by executing the last remaining conservative elements within the army Meander accelerated his overthrow; the rank and file began to look to the ZWP for leadership as Meander attempted to assume (clumsy) command of the army.

Following a general strike by factory workers in Baikonur, in which the local garrison (including Meander's Immortals imperial guard division) participated, Zakharov led a march towards to Meander's palace. With no recourse and no remaining political support, Meander was forced to abdicate; he and his family were exiled, their property seized and the Satrapy abolished.

Following this, the ZWP assumed leadership of the country and proceeded with a program of rapid reform; new political institutions were created, Esperanto was adopted as the official language and the country was renamed Aûroro (Esperanto for Zarya). Minimal opposition was faced in during this revolutionary period; what little there was came from the Zaryan Syndicalist Federation. The ZSF attempted to mount a guerilla campaign in Aûroro's west. However, following two years of sporadic fighting this campaign petered out. There continue to be occasional stirrings of Syndicalist opposition within Aûroro, but they are mostly a local problem for the Western Sovjeto (regional council).
