The Holy Imperium of Banduria is a massive island nation in the far northern reaches of the world, nearly frozen. With its large population, powerful military, strong economy, and authoritarian political and social policies, it is renowned as a nation of "imperialist, warmongering bastards" as an Emurvian delegate so aptly put it. The Imperium is an ancient and stable hereditary empirical monarchy; while its social policies resemble those of fascism it prefers the label of "national capitalist". The Imperium is an agressive and active foreign power launching frequent invasions of other nations in this manner.

The History of the Imperium

A Colonial Age

The Imperium of Banduria was founded hundreds of years ago when colonists began landing on the vast island that was to become Banduria. The colonists swiftly took over the whole island and enslaved the natives, beginning a prosperous society. While Bandurian land was inhabited as early as 1276, the Mayoralty of Banduria was not established until 1529. Ruled by a Mayor and democratic Senate, Banduria quickly fell into economic and military decay.

A Revolutionary Age

In 1644, a young man named Tivero Remo had a vision—of a united Imperium under a single government, free from rebellion, a world superpower. He never lived to see his dream realized. In 1650, he finally acted on his dream and led a revolution against the corrupt Mayor and Senate, leading more than 70,000 colonists against the government. He was killed in battle, but the civil war dragged on for twenty more years as Remo's successor, an older and more experienced soldier named Samuel Noster, led the growing revolution against the old Mayoral army. Finally, after more than 20 years of fighting, the tired army finally gave up. Noster assumed the throne as the first Emperor of the newly renamed Imperium of Banduria.

An Imperial Age

Noster, or Romulus I as he named himself, founded a dynasty that was to last until the present day. Early Emperors were beset with troubles with the army and rebellious loyalists to the old Mayoralty. However, the Golden or Decian Age of the Imperium began with Decius I, who restored stability with the Legions, but much more importantly with Decius Aurelius, who was possibly the most important and powerful emperor ever to rule the Imperium.

Aurelius was the first one who established the Emperor as the manifestation of God on Earth, among other things. He also created the Imperial Legions almost as they are today, and mandated that prisoners serve in the army—the ancestors of today's Fanatics. Decius Aurelius maintained stability and great economic growth; despite his high taxes, businesses were free to do as they wished and trade flourished, gaining Banduria many allies.

The Decian age formally ended in 1767 with the death of Decius Aurelius. No emperor before or since has held quite so much power so wisely... with a few possible exceptions. It was followed by times of unrest and power struggles among various factions. Civil war engulfed the Imperium. It was around this time, in the early 1800s, that a man named Thiergo Khara was writing. Khara was a philosopher who argued in his monumental work, Pace Imperia, that absolute monarchy with complete control over the people was the only way to maintain security. Khara went on to list the traits of a good absolute rule and the methods a ruler could use to maintain power

For a while these policies were unimplementable, and Khara died in 1818, never living to see his philosophy actually implemented in society. But around that time the young Crown Prince, Savarticus I, read Pace Imperia and began formulating plans to implement it. When he ascended to the throne in 1836, he began the process of creating the Imperium as it is today.
