The Grand Duchy of Beejaya is a large economically powerful nation that puts education, law and order, and its military as priorities. While the nation enjoys a decent standard of living and civil rights, there is very little within the country that goes unnoticed by the goverment. Nevertheless, the people enjoy many freedoms including freedom of press, religion, and speech with little harassment from the goverment. While protests do happen from time to time for a more open goverment or even a change from its monarchy, most of the population seems content with the status quo. It's monarch, The Grand Duke, remains extremely popular due to his bold leadership and dedication to lift the people from poverty.

Recent History
The current monarch in power became Grand Duke after Beejay's previous monarch, Grand Duke Day fled the country among riots and political turmoil. While a benevolent ruler by most standards, the previous Grand Duke could not rein in the parliament whose isolationist policies were destroying the Beejayan economy. While more and more citizens were becoming unemployed everyday, the Grand Duke refused or did not have the courage to remove the person most responsible for this crisis, Prime Minister Demming.
With the announcement of yet another tariff on imports, riots soon broke out in all major cities. As rioters stormed the Royal Palace, Grand Duke Day made a daring escape with his personal guard via helicopter, which was all broadcast live over T.V. With his whereabouts unknown, but with reports that he had fled the country, Prime Minister Demming had the parliment delcare her Grand Duchess of Beejaya and had the parliament suspend itself. She had ordered the military and police to restore order "by any means necessary," however her orders fell upon deaf ears.
As riots erupted in major cities, the military stood down. Commanders were unsure whether they should follow the orders of the new Grand Duchess. Without military support, police departments were soon overwhelmed with violence. Barricading themselves in their departments, most major cities were without law and order. As the new Grand Duchess took to the airwaves issuing decrees, some city mayors began declaring their own independence from Beejaya declaring themselves King of their city. Rumor of civil war was rampant as communication began to break down all over the country.
It was during this erupting chaos that Archduke Berkley stepped into the national spotlight. As director of the Beejayan Intelligence Services, or B.I.S. he had been monitoring the situation for several days. As he had no constitutional role in the crisis, he remained on the sidelines continuing with his job. However, on the 10th day of the crisis several infantry units along with paramilitary elements surrounded the Royal Palace and began to shoot protesters. This incident was repeated infront of the capital building where members of parliment, from which the former Prime Minister had help elect attempted to rein in other cities without success. It was after this incident that he, along with top members of the intelligence services, known as "The Wild Cards," went into action. Most Beejayans had not seen the Archduke or had even heard of the shadowy figure who had for several years ran the intelligence services of their nations. They were introduced to him when a live TV feed broke into channels showing him with several of his top agents riding on top of a HumVee carrying FN P90s entering the barracks of "The Walrus," Colonel-in-Chief of the elite Beejayan 1st Dragoon The Walrus had also remained on the sidelines, unsure who he should take orders from. As the Archduke hopped off the HumVee he began to bark out orders rallying the troops to restore order. In an heated exchange, carried live, The Walrus agreed that the Archduke should take command. Already at a high state of alert, the troops were quickly ready to depart. Before departing the Archduke issued this statement:
"I am not the Grand Duke. I am not next in line to the throne. In fact until last week I was techinically 27th in line to the throne. But I am a Beejayan. And I am taking these forces to stop the violence. I call on all military units loyal to this country to help restore order. I will arrest anyone contributing to this chaos."
As the 1st Dragoons left the barracks they split into two groups. The Walrus and some of the Archduke's agents left with two battalions and headed towards the capitol building to arrest the paramiliatry units outside of the building and anyone inside. The Archduke took the other two battalions and headed towards the Royal Palace. TV Crews carried live footage of The Walrus, riding on top of a Warrior leading his troops down the main thoroughfare towards the capital building. As automatic rifle fire rung out, the Dragoons returned massive amounts of fire, killing several paramilitary members and injuring more. Resistance soon collasped and several units that were supporting the former Prime Minister switched sides. Around the capital, idle units including the entire 21st Crimson Rangers, commendeered by the chasmatic Baroness Ruby declared "The Crimson Rangers have come to defense of Beejay and true leader of this country, The Archduke!"
Assault On The Royal Palace
The Archduke's assualt on the royal palace met more stiff resistance. Beejaya were treated to twisted picture on most channels as the major news channels, using a split screen showed the Grand Duchess giving the speech on how she would lead the country power and riches while on the other side the Archduke, armed with his FN P90, firing into the palace with his troops. For several hours a pitched battle was waged, all covered by national news. However with the arrival of more and more troops loyal to the Archduke, he pushed into the palace. On live TV, he shot open the door and walked into the office of the Grand Duchess. In an odd display, the Grand Duchess ordered the Archduke to be executed. Instead, she was arrested and led away with her supports to a military jail. Standing on balcony of the palace, the troops cheered Archduke and declared him to be the new Grand Duke.
The New Grand Duke
Legally this turned out to be true. Even though the former Prime Minister had no claim to the throne, the Parliament did have the power to declare that the previous monarch, Grand Duke Day, to have abicated. With that abication, the Grand Duke revoked everyone's claim to the throne in his immediate family, leaving the Archduke the next in line to the throne. The first act of the new Grand Duke was to leave the parliament suspended and to order the military into the cities where mayors had declared themselves king. The people soon rallied around thier new Grand Duke and within 3 days all cities had been restored to goverment control. The former Prime Minister, her supporters, and rebellious mayors had been arrested. Next the Grand Duke reorganized the goverment and placed his closest associates into key positions. Soon, normalcy returned to the country.
Goverment
Originally a constitutional monarchy, the government has been reorganized by the New Grand Duke. While there were calls to eliminate the entire concept of a monarchy and revert to a presidential system, these were brushed off as being "too radical" for the country. Other contended that the former system should be reinstated, however as this led to the previous crisis the leaders now in control were none to eager to start that again.
With parliament suspended, Grand Duke Berkley began to appoint former members of his staff to important positions, such has Minister of Defense and Minister of Diplomatic Affairs. While this would be considered nepotism, all of his appointments have been well received due to their qualifications and decent management of the country.
The technical term for this form of government is a Meritocracy. It is unknown whether these people will be removed if they start to make mistakes, but it seems that the Grand Duke does not appoint people to positions because he likes them. Rather, their appointments are made because he feels they are the best people for that position.
Recently, a weaker parliament had convened with MP's being elected by the people. While this parliament has not direct say over any major government decisions, it is a direct link between the people and the Grand Duke. Regular meetings are held so that concerns can be addressed and problems can be rectified by the government.

Current Status of The Former Goverment
Prime Minister Demming and most of her supports were jailed for crimes against the state. They were held in a brig at Fort Sylvia, a large military complex just outside the Royal City of Edinboro. Most were released after signing a document relinquishing thier positions in the goverment and giving an oath of loyality to the new goverment. Those who refused to do so, including former Prime Minster Demming, have remained jailed. The Grand Duke has stated that they will remain there until they are no longer a threat to the nation. It is unlikly that the former Prime Minister will be released any time soon as she still claims that she is the leader of the country. Published reports suggest that she has suffered a total mental breakdown. The current location of former Grand Duke Day at this moment remains unknown. The B.I.S. is currently looking for him.
Military of Beejaya

The military has long received significant amounts of money from the government. With these large budgets the military itself has grown from a militia style self defense force to an active top notch military. At any given time there are several divisions on standby to handle any crisis that may arise. Leaked classified studies reported in newspapers have indicated that the full force of the military could be mobilized within two months. While the expanded military has been a recent occurrence, there are several units that have a long and cherished history. Today these make up the elite units of the Beejayan military and often play leading roles in military actions. Each one of these regiments is commanded by a member of government. Some opposition parties criticize that these commands can lead to conflicts of interest, but as of yet none has arisen.

Military Branches
The Beejayan military has only two branches, the army and the air force. Being a landlocked country, the military projects it's power through the air. While the army concentrates on the defense of the country, the air force concentrates on offensive measures. Recently efforts have been made to interrogate both services to work more efficiently together. The success of this integration has yet been tested in actual combat situations, however war games conducted have given positive results.
Education
Second only to the military, education receives a large amount of funding from the government. All Beejayans received 20 years of education free from the government. This, combined with many opportunities to serve for corporations and with in the government, is credited as the reason the country has not fallen into Civil War and public apathy for the somewhat undemocratic way the country is governed.
The schools and universities have received many honors for their quality of education. Foreign students, although a minority on campuses, have found themselves compelled to stay for further education due to the fine institutions located throughout the country. Many regional and city leaders have extensive education in city management increasing the efficiency of the country as a whole.
There are private universities that offer affordable education after 20 years for more advanced studies. These too enjoy government funding through scholarships. The government keeps an ever watchful eye on these institutions to pluck qualified students from their ranks to run important projects.
