Abridged History

The United Socialist States of Bergist is a vast and sprawling nation of approximately 1.5 billion people (2006 Census). Formerly a part of the world characterized by petty skirmishes between warring states, the area was finally united in 1834 by Marcus Krane, an ancestor of today's president, Joseph Krane. Since the unification, a decidedly socialist government has attempted to provide a level of equality between the formerly hostile states, in an effort to wash away any lingering resentment.

Since then, Bergist's economy has steadily grown, flourishing in the early 2000s to cement Bergist's position in the world economy. This, in turn, has allowed for the revamping of the Bergistian military, bringing the number of active duty personnel to roughly 15 million men. Largely surrounded by mountains, the Bergistian Air Force has also been overhauled, making an already skilled airforce all the more prepared to defend its borders.

Criticisms and Conflicts in Recent Years

In mid 2005, Bergist was brought to its knees by internal strife. The northern-most state of Bergist, a small, barren area known as Despartia, staged a coup, attempting to break free from its parent state. Despartia clearly announced its reasoning to the world, claiming that its parent government had failed to adequately care for Despartia during the states long, deadly winters. Armed ground combat lasted over a year, almost completely removing Bergist from world events, as it turned inwards to deal with this uprising. The uprising was eventually starved into submission, as what few food reserves they did have dried up, and rebels began defecting. Although Bergist immediately sent aid to the area to relieve the suffering, this is still an aspect of major contention in Bergistian politics.
