Background

Bernstead is a Serene Republic in the naturally diverse region of Aeralirya. Offering extensive freedom to its citizens, who choose whether to vote or not, where to spend their money in and which department their tax goes, the omnipresent government places close attention to the livelihood, welfare and education of its citizens.

Citizens select which government department gets their income tax Liryas each year, motorists must pay to enter inner-cities during peak hours, a crusade against barbaric religious practices has begun, and the government's religious works are headed by a New Age guru. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Bernstead's national animal is the swan, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Lirya.

History

Bernstead started as a fiefdom in the region of South Pacific. It was under the protection of the Farthalan, which was then part of the region of Torino. Soon, Farthalan established a lush region and named it Aeralirya. Bernstead, as a protectorate of Farthalan, moved in.

Jagla was then formed by Farthalan. Its leaders were those that believed in dicatorship. To keep a balance in the region, Bernstead was formed into a Kingdom led by Lord Protector Bismark Androos. It was still, however, only a puppet of Farthalan.

As Jagla grew in power, movements for freedom in Bernstead grew. At last, the expenses of Farthalan in crushing the riots become too much, and they were forced to free Bernstead. The nation was then transformed into a Commonwealth with Farthalan, with Minister Arthur Leivogn as leader.

After five years, the Most Serene Republic of Bernstead was formed. Its first leader was Chancellor Trvain Azon, the current head of the Bernstead government.
