History

Early History

The island nation of Bramstoker was settled earliest in the 12th Century by people Anglo-Saxon origins. What little records remain of that era give indications of several warring Kingdoms upon the island formed from the original settlers. The earliest indication of a united Island is found in 1362, with a document entitled Thee Declaratione of Brotherhoode and Union, setting forward jointly-governed Federation of each Kingdom with a basic executive committee for diplomatic relations between each group. It is unsure how long this Federation lasted before war broke out again, but the result of this ancient war led to the dominance of one particular Kingdom, ruled at that time by Guie Bramstokere. This Kingom established itself as a hegemony over the other groups, and Guie Bramstokere was proclaimed ruler of the Kingdom of 'All Bramstokere' in 1370.

From the 14th Century to the 18th Century, the Kingdom was left largely alone in its isolation, until the arrival of German Colonialists during the Empire building era. The island was settled by German citizens, who began to dominate the island with their culture. When resistance was met by the native Bramstokerans, the German Empire utilised force, and subjugated the island to colonial rule as Deutschland-Bramstoker (German Bramstoker) for the next 200 years.

The Island was finally granted independence following the First World War and the destruction of the German Empire. Bramstoker set forth a democratic Consitution and became The Republic of Bramstoker, which last until the early 21st Century.

Modern History

The Republic first came into difficulties at the end of the Cold War, when the economy suffered a massive depression following the collapse of Communism. Although a neutral state in the ideological battle between East and West, the Republic had developed foreign business links with several state-owned companies behind the Iron Curtain. As the wall came down during the late eighties, so did the Bramstokeran exports of minerals and agricultural produce that helped feed the citizens of the countries in the Warsaw Pact.

Subsequent governments failed to solve the crisis, leading to wide-scale dissillusionment and the rise of Communist and Fascist parties to prominence in the Republic's political scene. Although neither parties attended any democratic elections, the membership base of each group caused elected governments to stop and think carefully about legislation, for fear of failure leading to revolution.

Their fears were confirmed on 1 November 2006, known within Bramstoker as The November Revolution, military officers in alliance with the United Bramstoker Party - an alliance of right-wing groups against the government - staged a bloodless Coup D'etat against the incumbent Liberal Democratic Party. The UBP, headed by President Johnathon Rawlings, declared Martial Law and announced the dissolution of government and new elections for a National Assembly to take place in the future.
