The Coup D'Etat of May

On the 26th of May 2005, The 1st Infantry Division of the Laos People's Army was on training exercises south of Vientiane when the country's leading Military Commander, General Hu, ordered his troops to take the Capital and capture the Presidential Mansion. General Hu declared the incumbant President, Khamtai Siphadon, a "puppet of the West" who had betrayed the nation. Most of the Armed Forces rallied to the banner of Hu and began securing other areas of the country. President Khamtai was taken completely by surprised and was killed during the firefight to take the Mansion from the little Loyalist forces that remained. Vientiane was taken in twenty minutes.

The idealism that Hu had maintained was the reason for his actions was quickly found to be false. Within minutes of the Coup, an aircraft transporting three British men arrived at the Capital's main airport. They were escorted to the Presidential Mansion, whereupon General Hu surrendered his rule of the country to one of the men, later discovered to be Jacob Trelawne Somersby. In what analysts now believe was a step towards securing his powerbase, the new President appointed his two brothers as Ministers of the National Government and promptly shot General Hu. He then appointed former Police Commissioner Li to Marshall of the Army and gave an Executive Order to merge the Police with the Army. The Laos National Assembly was called into an emergency session whereupon the 109 members of the Assembly voted unaimously to change the national name to Chrisstan, the national flag to its current state, and the name of the ruling Laos People's Revolutionary Party to the Chrisstan Unity Party. There is evidence that the Assembly was coerced into its decisions due to the large presence of infantry forces at the meeting, officially to "maintain the safety of Democratic National Representatives."
