The People's Republic of Daiverter is a huge, safe nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Daiverter's national animal is the Tiger, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Daichen.

Vertian People

Vertian is the word for the humanoid species that dominates the area of Daiverter. They are a hearty people. Their bodies are covered in a fine, but plush fur, however several parts of their bodies have hardened scaled on them. The exact placement of the scales is different in each person. They have small, vestigial wings on their back, which is a sign of pride for the Vertian people, and two non-prehensile tails. They are digigrade, and each foot ends in 3 evenly spaced toes. Their colors range from dull brown to orange, to black and grey. Their eye colors run the same spectrum as humans, but they also are known to have a dark purple and brigher yellow eyes from times. Vertians can mate with humans, although they seldom do, but the offspring are usually just a shorter human with stripped markings, and possibly elongated ears, or a tall Verter with small Vertian features. Vertians give live birth, usually a litter of 2-5 offspring, the females are nearly indistinguishable from the males from a simple glance, and Vertians are born capable of eating soft foods, however, Vertians are mammals and produce milk, although mammaries are hidden by fur. Vertians are often born blind, but gain eyesight within a few days, and learn to talk earlier than their human counterparts.

Culture

The people of Daiverter are a cynical, often times greedy, but highly suspicious populous. They have often anti-forgiener policies, and are often wary that people they do not know or understand are after them. Most Vertians regard anything they do not understand as a potenial enemy, however, they are pragmatic enough so that they are capable of accepting unusual things, albeit slowly. The people in Daiverter have little cultural values on spirituality; most scholars in the country view religion with hostility, so much so that they have warped their own secular believings into an almost religious ferver. Few Vertians see the irony in this. They tolerate other people's religions so long as they stay more or less secret, but violent religious movements, such as the Violetists, cause uproars, and the people of Daiverter are not above executing those they see as a threat. Most Vertians own weapons, however, there are strict registration laws on their ownership. Arms repair, use, and conditioning is a part of their primary education. The Vertians have very strong views on authority, respect and honor. Both genders are treated rougly equal, in part because it is very difficult to distinguish between male and female without a invasive examination. Homosexuality is common among Vertians, who might end up falling in love without even knowing the gender of their consort, and is seen as a natural countermeasure to their naturally quick replenishing populations (Vertians have a relitively quick gestation, and birth small litters, rather than the usual one child). Vertians are known for their mock combat and gladitorial style battles, and such matches are very popular TV events.

History

Before Verter 001

The Vertian people migrated from their native barren caves in the mountains to settle the land below at the start of the stone age. Several skirmishes with religious and primitive Thorinian people made them jaded and evasive to others and distrustful of other hominids in their territory. After several hundred years, their government was a mass of turmoil and almost anarchy; something that no self respecting citizen of Daiverter would tolerate. Coupe after coupe after revolution are civil war destroyed most of their written history, however, at the end, they decided that no living being was capable of running their government.

After Verter 001

After the installation of Verter 001, which means 'The People' and has a place number up to the hundreds place, reminding the people that if need be, the computer can be adjusted or even outright replaced, the people were able to finally maintain a balance of authority, economy and civics they had pursued for several hundred years. The people are comfortable giving up freedoms in the name of order, something that upsets many of their fellow nations. Daiverter extends its help to forgien nations, not by sending in troops or supplies, but by annexing the nation, destroying its government, and making it a part of Daiverter, re-educating its population, however it does not start wars with other nations unless their people request it.

Government

The government of Daiverter is run by a large supercomputer, called the Supercomputer Verter 001. It is housed in several self replicating nodes all over the country, but it is rumored its primary nodes are in the capital of Vortex. The Vertians revere their technological marvel very much. The computer is very concerned with law, order, education, as it has been programed, however, it also will not allow any challenges to its sovereignty, something that the Vertians themselves have instilled in it since its conception. It focuses on creating a nation that is strong, proud, runs smoothly, and is for the most part, free, so long as that its rules are obeyed. The computer does not concern itself with small things that it considers trifling; things like marriage rules, how small businesses are run, the exact machinations of a citizen's life, are considered beneath the government's consideration. There are few laws in Daiverter, but the ones that do exist are very encompassing and have severe reprocutions for breaking them. Most laws are based around harming another, or subverting the government's control, and the penalty for both are usually death. One in Daiverter is free to live their life how they choose but are never free to question the authority of the computer, and the computer itself has become almost paranoid for its own safety. The number designation is to remind the people and the computer that if it, like all the living governments before it, fail, it too will be liquified and replaced, however, in the computer's own mind, so long as it stays the basic track it has retained since its construction it will be fullfilling its job, and it is ready to protect itself from harm until it deems itself as having failed. For this job, it has created several sub-routines, or multiple personalities within itself, to monitor itself. Only a majority of these nodes may end Verter 001's career; the nodes themselves are under the strict guardianship of each other. The main personality is not aware of these nodes any longer, however.
