At A Glance

DLE, the common way of refering to DemonLordEnigma, is a small interplanetary empire existing in the Dead Zone, a region of space name for the fact no ability besides memory can map the region. The nation is known for its unusual people, detailed below, and the its enjoyed isolation, a fact backed up by the billions spent on orbital defenses and the Empire's immigration policies. Outsiders can buy metals and minerals for surprisingly cheap prices, as the nation has large mining operations on multiple lifeless worlds.

Government

The government of DLE is Enigma, Dictator and public icon. What Enigma says goes, and the people, except for some rebels in the territory of Merlyns, are happy with that. A few attempts at holding elections have resulted in the populous telling Enigma to continue holding power.

It should be noted that, when it comes to politics, Enigma is what many describe as liberal. He is striving hard to shape the Sarkarasetans from the tribe-like people they were into a powerful empire spanning a large portion of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Sarkarasetans, having similar goals as a whole, are willing to follow him all the way.

Society

DLE's society is perhaps the hardest to nail down. The following is perhaps the best, if somewhat limited, way of giving an idea of what people are dealing with in DLE.

Marriage- Marriage is, as a cultural practice, mostly just for legal benefits. It is unregulated by the government beyond stating it must be with a sentient being. However, the Sarkarasetans have a genetic stigma against incest and a social stigma against interbreeding with species they consider genetically inferior, such as humans.

Karsonat Pendel- "Celebration of Freedom's Reign." A cultural burning of crosses in large numbers that has no meaning at this time, its meaning having been lost down the centuries. However, it is not a practice of hatred or discrimination, as the practice takes place in open fields set aside for it. The cross is built using your typical T shape, only with a half-circle covering the top-three prongs (or whatever they are called). Then it is covered in a flamable liquid, gasoline was popular while it was still available, and set on fire. It should be noted the crosses strangely resemble a few derelict ships we have come across, but a correlation has yet to be made.

Education- Education is a practice done in the home. All attempts at a state-back education system have, with the exception of military training, failed.

Backwards Engineering- Perhaps the most unusual thing is how easily Sarkarasetans can backwards engineer, a suggestion that perhaps their earlier technological advancements before their slide backwards for several millenia may have a relation to their genetics. As a people they tend to advance, on their own, at a rather surprising rate. Put together and given a goal and the imagination is the limit.

Technology- Technology is everywhere in DLE. Primary communications are through a system similar to the internet, several stores and libraries are entirely electronic, and even some of DLE's citizens only exist in computers (AIs). With recent advances in cybertechnology and nanotechnology, people are even getting entire body parts replaced with cybernetic versions or getting surgeries from pills. In addition, DLE is quite advanced in biotechnology, allowing it to engineer viruses to capacities not matched by most Earth nations and genetically engineer species normally off limits with extreme accuracy, not to mention the advanced cloning facilities, though it prefers not to use those on sentient beings.

One other area DLE excels at, due to its AIs, is automation. All government factories are completely automated, with AIs overseeing them to make sure they function properly. Most of these factories produce DLE space ships, armor, and weapons. However, many of those ships have shown themselves capable of operating far beyond their designated design limits in action, including a few that have shown capacity to turn and dodge faster than the crew can think.

Religion- Religion is viewed with a apathetic eye, which is one of the main reasons it declined from power early in Sarkarasetan history and has never been able to rise since then. It's pretty much a case of worship how you will as long as you don't cause trouble.

Social Interactions- Compared to many peoples, Sarkarasetans are quite informal as a whole. The only way one can actually tell who the leader is in many cases is to wait for an order to be given. This level of interactivity results from centuries of having to survive in small groups and is the reason all military efforts involve small numbers.

Prejudice- There is a strange lack of internal prejudice against other members of the same species. However, genetics often play a role in prejudice against other species, though such prejudice has dropped away from being a dominant trait to being a mild one. Sarkarasetans do get along well with humans, but they still view humans as genetically and societally inferior. However, they do not let this show, mainly because they recognize humans as a sentient species in spite of any reservations they may have about the truth of human sentience. A human inside the DLE Empire will notice a certain coolness towards them, but mostly this is because they are strangers (other than height, there are no obvious differences between Sarkarasetans and humans at a glance). The same xenophobia typically applies to other species as well.

Enigma- Enigma is a cultural influence of his own. Being the first working Sarkarasetan device activated, despite them not knowing it at the time, he has acted to unify the entire species and try to regain what they once had. The recent discovery of him being an android has only helped him in this. Enigma acts as a leader, a symbol of the past, and a goal all at once. In a way, he is a greater icon of what they hope to achieve than anything else the Sarkarasetans have come across.

Cultural Connections to Past- Other than the Karsonat Pendel, the language, Enigma, and a few ruins, the Sarkarasetans have no connections to their past. The current cultures are most self-constructed with the last few decades and rely heavily on the few connections they have as a form of unity. Without these connections and a want to regain the culture they have lost, the Sarkarasetans would separate into small groups and probably end up being wiped out by the first invader to come along. Perhaps one day they shall regain the empire they once ruled.

Humor- As a people, the Sarkarasetans have a humor that shows up in every aspect of their life. From the silly titles of their leader to banter of the military soldiers when relaxing, there seems to be a lack of general formality.

Unspoken Social Rules:

1) When things get serious or people get angry, the humor stops. 2) No groping without permission. This has resulted in a few deaths. 3) Despite the Dictator's wishes, vigillanties (sp?) are an approved way of dealing with criminals. 4) Assume people are always armed and show respect. Mostly, they are always armed. 5) Be courteous to outsiders, but not friendly until you have sized them up enough to determine if you wish to interact with them. 6) Respect the Dictator.* 7) The only difference between the sexes is in biology. Otherwise, there is no reason a person cannot do something because of their gender. There is only one exception to this. 8) The Minister of Defense is to always be female.* 9) When cussing, Sarkarasetan is preferred no matter the language. 10) A person's sexuality is unimportant, as long as they are not going against a stigma. (stigmas listed above)

  • No legal reason behind the asteriked items. Enigma doesn't care if they respect him and doesn't use secret police. These have no known reason for evolving as such.

Age of Adulthood: 16. This is the age a person is usually done with their education, the age they can legally enter the military, and the age they can give consent. This is a legal practice more than a cultural practice.

Handicapped- When it comes to the physically or mentally handicapped, the people as a whole generally tend to let them do what they can on their own and help them with the rest. As a result of this and another trait, DLE has developped cybernetics for medical uses. Military uses are considered out of the question for the time being.

Independence- As a people, Sarkarasetans are very independant. They only trade for what they need but cannot produce, develop, or steal from derelicts themselves. They prefer to develop their own tech or take that from derelicts and backwards engineer it. Anything they buy they have a habit of backwards-engineering to make sure they can maintain. On occasion, they have found ways around the normal safeguards against it, but mostly prefer not to hassle with such when it is easier to develop it on their own.

Magic- When it comes to magic, all they have done is integrate it into their daily lives and begun to investigate it. It is expected they will take decades to fully understand magic, but as a people they are patient. In the meantime, what comforts magic provides are exploited just as technology is.

DLE Empire vs. DLE:

DLE Empire is the region of Terran and Terrator and includes all nations in it, as well as Tiamat Taveril. It is ruled over by DLE. DLE itself is a much smaller part of it, despite ruling it. When it comes to warfare, ICly threats will be for the empire itself to be used but it will actually be only those from the country of DLE.

Empire Nations: DemonLordEnigma, Tiamat Taveril, Merlyns, Apsu Lilith.

Economy

In DLE, the focus of the economy is on the military. The major businesses compete with it for workers, it does all of the exploring of space, and it is the one thing that always has job openings. That, and the military is also what keeps people safe from the neighbors and other problems.

The leading industries are information technology, metal mining, and arms manufacturing.

History

Sarkaraset and Sarkaraseta

Thousands of years ago, on a small, isolated planet named Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy, humans existed and had begun their advancement. Most of their history is lost, except they had a powerful nation rise called the United States of America. That nation, advancing rapidly and building a small empire, managed to survive four world wars and defeat every major power they encountered. In the end, they were left surpreme over the Earth. Or, so they thought.

The United States had several problems. One is that, as a nation, it was never truly united to begin with. It had constant internal struggles, even fighting two civil wars, and the nation was always dividing itself in many smaller groups. The second problem was that its economy was entirely dependant on other nations, with just about everything being imported, and most of the people were either in white collar jobs or poor. The third problem was the government had turned from being for the people to oppressing them.

The people finally grew tired of the system. Some wanted the U.S. to take a more militaristic approach, forcibly dominating everyone. The others wanted democracy. The resulting civil war utterly tore the nation apart and, from the ashes, rose both two nations and a new race. It would just be 175 years later.

When the people finally settled into two nations, all traces of who they once were, including their species, were gone. The people had evolved into a new species, taller and slightly stronger and smarter than the old. Plus, their language was now a mixture of all the languages influencing the nation. Splitting into two groups, these people called themselves the Sarkarasetans and became the nations of Sakaraset, militaristic and oppressive, and Sarkaraseta, democratic and capitalist.

The two nations extended diplomatic ties to those around for a short period before withdrawing. They found themselves too different from those around. Determined to find a planet where they would not be strange, they focused heavily on spacial technologies and eventually left Earth.

Much of the history of the two empires is lost. No one knows where they ended up, what peoples they contacted, what planets they colonized, or even exactly how advanced they got. What is known is the two nations disliked each other and frequently warred. But, towards the end, the two began to mysteriously work together, creating colonies together and even going as far as to try to create robots with their entire history intact. Then, just as mysteriously, they decided to go to war and nearly obliterated each other. With a few exceptions, no trace of those two nations survived to this day.

DemonLordEnigma

On a world named Terran, over 3500 years after the two empires who the inhabitants were descended from wiped each other out, a farmer was digging in his field when he found a strange hatch. Opening the hatch, he descended into the dark tunnel, surprised to find lights comming on as he descended. He was equally shocked to see a man, strangely beneath two meters in height (the average height of a Sarkarasetan), lying on a metal slab. The farmer shook the man awake, surprised someone would be asleep in a buried hatch.

Unknown to that farmer, he had woken Enigma, the last android built by Sarkaraset. Enigma, upon emerging into the world and finding the area he was in unclaimed, declared himself emperor. The people, and three nations in the area who had already stabilized from thousands of years of anarchy, were mostly unimpressed. At least, until Enigma started building ships capable of leaving the atmosphere, at which point the people in the area he claimed became curious. Suddenly finding the people comming to him, Enigma started to give out advice on how to plant crops, medicate people, etc. Within a year, his claim of emperor was instead recognized as Dictator and Enigma found himself in charge of a nation of five million people.

Enigma immediately set out to try to find out what was going on with the strange ruins in his area. It was at that point his nation found out what the other three knew: They were the remnants of the Sarkarasetans. Enigma also found one thing no other nation had, which was the plans for FTL Jump drives that used gravitons. And, surprisingly, the plans were only complicated in math, not actual parts requirements.

Organizing his people as best as he could, Enigma found them surprising. They were primitive in culture, yet as a people resilient, adaptive, and technologically advanced. He found they seemed to work best in small groups with little organization and even less support. He also found that, despite his attempts at creating a formal education system, the Sarkarasetans preferred to educate their children at home. But the one thing he found that piqued his curiousity was a combination of willpower and the intelligence that allowed them to quickly reverse-engineer technology within their understanding, and it was surprising how much they quickly grasped.

At this point, Enigma began to extend towards other planets. However, this revealed his nation's technological advantage and terrorist strikes, combined with unease with the nation of Tiamat Taveril, began. Enigma quickly organized a military and police force, only to find the same thing held true with their fighting tactics as working tactics. But, it allowed him to keep his people together despite terrorism problems and to negotiate a treaty with Tiamat Taveril.

When it came to space, Enigma's exploration crews eventually found a Klonor ship and, taking the opportunity, purchased several ships from them. The ships served for both military and police, even with the finding of the planet Terrator, for several years. These ships were also used when DLE forces first discovered the Earth nearest them and began diplomatic overtures there, even joining ISEC. It was at this time, however, a new discovery, kept secret from other nations, was made by Enigma himself: The Sarkarasetans were getting ready to evolve, and it would be rapid when it happened.

After several years of contact with Siesatia, DLE purchased several ships from them to replace the aging Klonor ships, which were promptly sold to Merlyns for way above what was paid for them. Then came the diplomatic troubles and attempted assassination of Enigma at a UN ball in the nation of Aliana, the near-war with Cherry Ridge, and the problems with the mysterious loss of a ship on its way to Terrator, and the problems Enigma's own ship had with unusual aliens from Protospace recently that left his ship destroyed and General Soybayun in charge of the nation until his return.

After the evolution of the Sarkarasetans, DLE began a new era of exploration. It discovered and plundered several secrets of an old Sarkarasetan battlecruise, which set the country years ahead. It also annexed the nations of Tiamat Taveril, Merlyns, and Apsu Lilith, resulting in the birth of the DLE Empire. In the time since then the country has begun bigger projects, suddenly looking forward to a time where it will head out into space with an even bigger presense than before. However, the empire is in for a rough road with the tensions between the ex-nations it now encompasses as evidenced by the recent problems with rebellions in Merlyns.

Of interesting note, DLE has come in contact with a being named Nergal, who seems to be responsible for the way the Dead Zone is. He introduced himself to DLE by combining it and an alternate-timeline DLE in a tesseract, creating confusion and mass panic. He did later undo the tesseract, only for DLE to discover he had altered the Cherry Ridge conflict away from Cherry Ridge surviving to the current version of how events went. For some reason, DLE has yet to be affected by the temporal change beyond finding some of their population moved, creating an unusual curiousity. Nergal himself pops up from time to time, plaguing Sarkarasetans with his cryptic comments, misleading predictions, advice both good and bad, and occasional case of altering the universe on a whim. DLE tries its best to conceal what is happening while they try to deal with it in private.

Another thing of odd interest is the fact the nation is currently undergoing research into advancing its fleets, perhaps suggesting the empire has something planned for the immediate future.

Wars and Genocides

Cherry Ridge

Cherry Ridge was a nation that decided to slaughter people practicing witchcraft in its nation. It got the nations of Siesatia, Balrogga, Democratic Colonies, and DemonLordEnigma involved in trying to stop it. Crazed Marines and New Exodus tried to negotiate a way to prevent war from happening. Negotiations eventually worked out and everyone landed representatives in Cherry Ridge to sign a treaty and work together.

Of course, it was not meant to be. Tormeta, undergoing the change to become a Vampire, went into a bloodlust and escaped DLE captivity, where she had been put for study due to the mysterious changes she was undergoing. During the time she was under the influence of the bloodlust, Tormeta ended up wounding several people, including giving Soybayun the concussion that led to her permanent personality alterations. The bloodlust eventually ended, but not before Tormeta had killed several people and infected the Cardinal of Cherry Ridge with the Sarkarasetan Vampiric Virus, turning him into a vampire, and Cherry Ridge had fired a missile at the Siesatian building where Tormeta was loose at.

Once that chaos settled, Soybayun discovered the DLE fleet had taken it upon themselves to respond. They had attacked Cherry Ridge, slaughtering the government and the majority of the military rather quickly. It was two more hours before Soybayun regained control of the DLE military, by which time the majority of the population of Cherry Ridge had been slaughtered. Spybayun, seeing a golden opportunity, annexed the nation into DLE holdings, giving the nation a foothold on Earth. DLE never went to trial for this or the later genocides involving Merlyns due to them predating the Eon Convention on Genocide.

Merlyns Rebellion

The Merlyns Rebellion is a famous DLE war that lasted 15 years. Several members of the Merlyns populous got together and decided to rebel. They managed to capture the capital city of the territory, only to have the rebellion attempt crushed by orbital bombardment by DLE forces to prevent them from capturing a nearby military base holding antimatter weapons. The weapons were later moved to orbit above Terrator. A year later, the rebels stole three DLE ships and bought a small fleet from Siesatia, before attacking it and the Balroggan embassy to DLE in an attempt to start a war. That failed, causing them to try an abortive attack on DLE that resulted in their allies being slaughtered. Several years would pass before they would try again, only for the rebels to be slaughtered and their base on Terran destroyed by an antimatter missile. The rebellion was officially over.

Slinao

Slinao was a nation that was ruled by the same person the people worshipped. At one point that ruler decided to have dissenters executed. Several nations decided to respond, only to have one fired at. Enigma immediately ordered ships around Earth to attack, hoping they could complete their mission or at least last until more ships arrived. The DLE ships fought hard, separating into multiple groups with specific goals, including one whose orders were to assassinate the government. Enigma hoped to convince the government to change its policies before that assignment was complete, only for it to be completed before the conversation was finished.

DLE ships quickly retreated home, their mission ass accomplished as Enigma was willing. Two thirds of the fleet sent in had been lost and the nation of Slinao had decided to set down its arms. Despite wanting to do more, Enigma was not going to order people slaughtered when they were not being a danger. Despite that, it appears the job may not be as finished as Enigma had hoped, though it will be a long time before that is tried again.

Space Region: The Dead Zone

Called the Dead Zone by DLE scientists because it is unmappable by all known texchnologies, this portion of the Milky Way and space outside of the galaxy appears to possibly be a circle or sphere of some type. All attempts to produce starmaps of it, or starmaps once inside, simply fail and produce random gibberish and incomprehensible drawings. The fact this does not affect star maps of other areas brought into this region suggests the affect may be artificial, although no exploration attempts have found the source of it yet. Anyone looking for the region can easily find it, as it's only 912.8 lightyears from Earth.

Most modern tech nations that look at this region find it to be unsurprising that it is unmapped, but not for the real reason. To outsiders, it appears to be mostly empty space with only a few stars surrounded by uninhabitable rocks. While mostly true of the star systems, at this time three inhabited planets are known to exist. One, Terran, was terraformed in the past to make it suitable for life and is the homeworld of DLE. The second, Terrator, is a planet naturally capable of supporting life and currently being colonized by DLE. Both will be discussed in their own entries. The third, Terrasot, is a planet that information is not being released on yet and, despite being naturally able to support life, won't be colonized for the time being.

However, planets and stars are not the only features of the region, with each discussed below.

Derelicts: Perhaps the most frequent feature of this region is derelict ships, many of which wandered into the region on exploration missions and promptly got lost. These range in technology level from pre-light speeds to as advanced as transgalactic warships run entirely by AIs. Most of these ships are extremely dangerous in their own right, as quite a few have active anti-intruder systems designed to kill as many people comming in as possible, strange biological agents or even entire creatures that evolved to survive without a normal ecosystem, or in some cases strange beings which seem to exist outside of the capacity of science to explain. There is even suggestions in old records of a massive graveyard of ships, though it has yet to be found.

Most people who deal with derelicts, especially those in this region, tend to develop an almost-religious fear of them. And for good reason. Derelicts that are intact or mostly intact are usually too dangerous to be worth whatever treasure they hold and the safer ships are probably already stripped of valuables before the last crewman stops breathing.

Unknown alien races: There seem to be several unknown alien races, many of them seeming to exist entirely outside of physical bodies. As they are mostly on derelicts, they are usually left alone. Pretty much everyone agrees this is as it should be for those species.

There are two, besides the Sarkarasetans, that live in this region and are known for piracy and graverobbing, although they leave locals alone. No contact of any sort has been made with those other races by any known government and it is suspected they are just rogue gangs hiding from the law.

Dyson's Logic: Also known as the Whirlpool, this is a giant dust cloud in space with a black hole in the center. The unknown elements the dust cloud is made of cause it to be sucked up by the black hole at a much slower rate than normal, all the while interactions with the radiation the black hole throws off creates powerful ion storms in the cloud, sometimes causing archs of energy to strike ships that get too close. The result looks like, as one person described it, "a giant purple hurricane in space."

Black Suns: These are what appear to be regular stars that don't throw off photons within the normal visible spectrum. Most of these stars have amazing temperatures that may account for it. A few, being amazingly cold for stars, may actually have once been black holes that are now oon the verge of a new evolution or final death. In any case, these pose a danger as sometimes a ship not paying attention will accidentally fly into one. They are not classified as black holes because they lack the massive gravity required.

Ion Storms: As if all of the above wasn't enough, this region is mysteriously prone to ion storms. Sometimes they come with small clouds, but mostly the only warning a ship gets before one hits is a sudden energy buildup in front of the ship, usually with them not having enough time to get out of the way first. There are two known cases of stationary ion storms, one being between two large derelicts that show signs of extreme energy damage and the other being in Dyson's Logic. Also, recently DLE has gained footage of a few ion storms reaching levels of energy powerful enough to blow up planets up to the size of Mars and, though these are rare, DLE suspects they are the reason most of the region is uninhabitable.

Explorers: Perhaps the greatest danger to locals are explorers who are not familiar with the region. These ships are often lost, heavily armed, and at least damaged or drain of personel from a bad encounter with either an ion storm, a derelict, or a black sun. These ships pose a danger because often the crew is extremely desperate and also quite lost. If left alone, explorers often turn into derelicts in a short amount of time, much to the benefit of the locals.

As a region, the Dead Zone is best described as hostile, merciless, and dangerous to all. Any ship not knowing what it is doing or helped out by locals is likely to join the masses of empty tombs that float, silent and undisturbed, in the dark regions between stars. And even for the locals, this region has a set of dangers that can easily turn a well-armed and prepared crew into a group of half-dead maddened lunatics just trying to survive. Worse is that these are just the known dangers of a region in the universe where no maps are possible and the pilots fly more by instinct than by knowledge. But, to those that call this region home it offers opportunities to thrive.

Planets

DLE currently owns three planets, though only two have information available on them at this time.

Terran

Type: Terraformed Rock

Majority of Terrain: Lifeless rock and ocean.

Distance from Earth: 1825.6 lightyears

Native Sentient Species: Sarkarasetans

Nonnative sentient species: 1 werewolf, a few humans, a some other species in minor amounts.

Other fauna: Several dragons, cockatrices, etc. that are usually labelled as mythical.

History:

Once a colony-world of Sarkaraset and Sarkaraseta, this world is now home to four nations of varying political viewpoints. It is from here that DLE hails and on this world the capital of DLE lies. The world is habitable due to the terraforming process, but most of the land will take several millenia to make capable of supporting life. By that time, the sun supporting it is expected to have cooled too far to allow the planet to support life anyway. It is expected to be abandonned within the next two thousand years.

Perhaps the most striking feature is the high presence of Sarkarasetan technology left over from the two empires, most of which DLE has yet to access and use.

System information for those looking for Terran: The planet is in a system of six planets, not a single one being bigger than Mars, and a sun that, while larger than Sol, is several millenia older and began to cool about 7000 years ago (around the same time the planet was colonized). The system has one inhabitable planet, the fifth one from the star.

Terrator

Type: Earth-like Planet

Majority of Terrain: Flat plains and water

Distance from Earth: 2738.4 lightyears

Native Sentient Species: None

Nonnative Sentient Species: Sarkarasetans

Other Fauna: Insects, none being more advanced than bees in organization.

Terrator is remarkable in that it is naturally inhabitable in a region of space best known for being both dead and hostile. The planet has two continents, one bigger than the other, and both have only a single mountain range. The planet is 60% water and about midway between Earth and Mars in size. The air is slightly lower than Earth's concentration, but well within adapatible ranges.

The planet is currently a colony-world of DLE. The Empire has put orbital platforms above it and is in the process of building cities and otherwise cultivating it for itself. DLE has yet to start mining procedures and, thus, have not harvested the local crystals or metals yet. But, finding this planet is not exactly easy, as it is in a system of four planets orbitting a Sol-like star that is typical of most solar systems in the Dead Zone.

No word on when, or even if, the planet will be open to other cultures in the future.

System information for looking for Terrator: Dicrections to it are classified. The general planet description gives enough information to find it if one is willing to search for several decades.

Allies and Alliances

Allies

Alliances

Note: One more alliance pending, will be added if they okay membership.

How to Gain Trade

In order to gain a trading foothold in DLE, you must offer something it does not have that it wants. At this point in time, that is not likely due to the nation's interests currently lying in technologies several centuries beyond it and the fact the nation is patient enough to develop such technologies on its own. What technologies it has needed it has either already obtain through development or through trade. However, DLE is willing to trade raw materials to anyone who has the money to pay for them and doesn't particularly care who they are as long as their money is good.

Fleet Size

3000 x DLEX80

1500 x DLEMB10

1500 x DLEMB30

300 x DLEEU10

300 x DLEMC20

150 x DLEMC30

60 x DLEPB20

3 x Graviton Destroyer

The above doesn't include fighters, both automated and manned, carried by ships. The ships are split into three fleets, so divide the numbers by 3 to get how many are in each fleet. One fleet is devoted to defending the inhabited planets in DLE, one to patrolling the massive border of the Dead Zone, and one to a combination of exploration, diplomacy, and trade security. The result is, despite the massive numbers, in mose cases the fleets are quite spread out, with the fleets sometimes having to range as far as halfway across the galaxy as need demands.
