The Aryan Republic of Demoritus
The Aryan Republic of Demoritus is a huge, safe nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed population of 708 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Education. The average income tax rate is 48%. A healthy private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Automobile Manufacturing and Uranium Mining.
Religious organizations are being forced to leave the country or pay income taxes like everybody else, roads are often attended by round-the-clock construction crews, people who are terrified of needles are torn between their phobia and free health care, and protests are legal but strictly supervised. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Demoritus's national animal is the White Wolf, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Demoritus Kroner.
