The Ducal Coast Guard (DCG) (Spanish: Guardia Costera Ducal) is a semi-independent branch of the Vassfforcian armed forces involved in maritime law enforcement, mariner assistance, search and rescue, and national defense. It is the smallest branch of the Ducal Armed Forces and its stated mission is to protect the public, the environment, and the Vassfforcian economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and Vassfforcian coasts, ports, and inland waterways.
The Ducal Coast Guard was created with the Reform of 52 as an independent branch of the Vassfforcian armed forces, before it was part of the Armada de Ultramar. However, it is only semi-independent from the Armada, the head chief of the coast guard is still the Primer Almirante, the head chief of the Armada de Ultramar, and its manpower is counted along that of the Armada rank and they use the same rank system and insignia.
The Ducal Coast Guard has a broad and important role in homeland security, law enforcement, search and rescue, marine environmental pollution response, and the maintenance of river, intracoastal and offshore aids to navigation (ATON). As of January 2005, the Ducal Coast Guard has about 39,000 men and women on active duty, 8,100 reservists, 7,000 full time civilian employees and 35,000 auxiliaries.
Structure
Officially, a member of the Ducal Coast Guard is called marino (Spanish for seaman).
The coast guard is made up of three components: the active component, the reserve component and the voluntary component. Reserve legions are primarily composed of part-time seamen who train in a ship for two months a year and once a week in navy facilities.
The coast guard is led by a military Head Chief of the Coast Guard (the Primer Almirante), who reports to the War Minister (for now it is the Generalísimo Don Bernardo Reyes). The Primer Almirante is a member of the High Command, the top ranking military commanders from each service who advise the Grand Duke on military and disaster matters and is also the head of the Armada de Ultramar
Operationally, though, control of the coast guard in wartime goes from the Grand Duke of the Most Serene Republic of Vassfforcia to the Concejo de Guerra, who has control of all armed forces units in their geographic area of responsibility.
The headquarters of the Coast Guard are on Septéntrion Military Base, Septéntrion and it is under the direct command of the Primer Almirante Don Mauricio Torre Bruno.
There are four geographical commands:
- The Regional Command of the North at Septéntrion Military Base. It is also the main headquarter of the coast guard.
- The Regional Command of Mountaura headquartered at Prubdablia, Letia
- The Regional Command of the East headquartered at Puerto Nuevo
- The Regional Command of the South headquartered at Filibustenia, Ibportia
Each one is commanded by a Capitán de Flota and have between 9’000 and 10’000 seamen.
