The Ducal Army is the largest branch of the Vassfforcian armed forces and has primary responsibility for land-based military operations. As of 2005, it consisted of 380’183 legionaries on war duty, 300’000 on service duty, 380’182 in the Reserve and 21'946'776 in the First Group of the National Guard.

The modern Ducal Army has its roots in the Ducal Guard and the armies of all the Catalan fiefdoms and the Gáltad kingdoms, which were put under the supreme command of the Grand Duke after the Treaty of Filibustenia. Since then, the Armada de Ultramar and the Ducal Air Force have been created independently from the Army but under the supreme command of the Grand Duke.

The army is managed by the Ministry of War which is headed by the Minister of the War who heads administrative affairs. The highest ranking military officer in the army is the Generalísimo.

Structure

Officially, a member of the Ducal Army is called a legionary.

The Ducal Army is made up of three components: the active (Regular Legions) component; and two reserve components, the Reserve Legions and the National Guard. Reserve legions are primarily composed of part-time legionaries who train for two months a year and once a week. The National Guard is composed of civilians between 18 and 25 years old who train twice a month and conduct one to two weeks of annual training each year to fulfill the compulsory military service. While the National Guard is organized, trained and equipped as a component of the Ducal Army, when it is not in federal service it is under the command of individual state's executives. However the National Guard can be federalized by order of the Grand Duke and against the local executive's wishes.

The Ducal Army is led by a military Head Chief of the Army (the Generalísimo), who reports to the Minister of War (for now it is the same person, Gen. Don Bernardo Reyes), who is a member of the High Command, the top ranking military commanders from each service who advise the Grand Duke on military and disaster matters.

Operationally, though, control of the Army in wartime goes from the Grand Duke of the Most Serene Republic of Vassfforcia to the Concejo de Guerra, who has control of all armed forces units in their geographic area of responsibility.

There are four geographical commands:

Each command receives two or more legions.

The Regular Legions

The Regular Legions are those that are in active service. There are twenty Infantry Legions, ten Cavalry (tank and helicopters) Legions, three Artillery Legions, five Legiones de Zapadores (Combat Engineers) and ten Tercios (Divisions) of Service Support. Every men in combat (legionaries and officers alike) have:

  • Low-light vision goggles.
  • personal GPS
  • 3 days rations
  • 15 Mts. of rope
  • Keblar helmet & armor
  • Portable radio
  • Handgun (.45 Magnum mostly)

Infantry Legions

The twenty infantry legions (I to XX or 1 to J) are the backbone of the Vassfforcian army. They are highly movable and always work jointly with the Ducal Air Force for air-to-ground fire support, supplying and deploylegionariest.

Personnel & Equipment:

  • 10’000 legionaries (plus 129 non-fighting officers)
  • 335 or 585 BTtiM-A* (70 are modified to be self-propelled artillery)

  • 250 or 500 MHtiM-C* (heavy armored combat helicopters)
  • 100 MH-T (transport helicopters)

(*) form the ‘cavalry’ of a legion. The two numbers stated depend on the type of cavalry (light or heavy) that Cohort VIII is.

Heavy Cavalry Legions:

The ten heavy cavalry legions (XXI to XXX or K to S) were created to offer extra support for the Infantry Legions and give the Ducal Army extra capabilities with a highly movable heavy armed force of attack and defense. It always works jointly with the Infantry and the Ducal Air Force.

Personnel & Equipment:

  • 9’996 legionaries (plus 129 non-fighting officers)
  • 2’000 BTtiM-A (heavy armored tanks) (crew: 4)

  • 10’009 .45 Magnums (or equivalent handguns)

Artillery Legions:

The three Artillery legions (XXXI to XXXIII or T to V) were created to offer extra support for the Infantry and give the Ducal Army siege capabilities. Although now these Legions are highly movable, they still never fight alone, but along the infantry and the cavalry.

Personnel & Equipment:

  • 9960 legionaries (plus 129 non-fighting officers)
  • 9960 AKB-103s
  • 60 heavy armored trucks equipped with SAM batteries (Startreaker-class missiles)

  • 150 PzH 2000 (5 legionaries assigned to each)
  • 2 heavy armored trucks equipped with a TELAR for Babur-class missiles (2+10 legionaries assigned)

Combat Engineer’s Legions:

The ten five Engineer’s legions (XXXIV to XXXVII or W to Ç) were created to support the other legions, thus they never fight alone and only operate on their own when they are offering aid after a natural disadter.

Personnel & Equipment:

  • 10’000 legionaries (plus 129 non-fighting officers)
  • 10'000 AKB-103s*

  • 200 heavy armored tanks equipped with HIMARS*

  • 10 heavy armored trucks equipped with a TELAR for Babur-class missiles*
  • 2500 - 5000 various trucks.*

(*) the exact numbers of these equiplegionariests depend on their mission. On aid missions they do not bring armament.

Service Support Tercios

A tercio was an old Spanish military formation composed of pikmen and musketeers. However, as technology changed the Vassfforcian tercios stopped seeing combat and finally became the service support divisions of the army. Since the early 1900 the Tercios de Intendencia have been the first army groups to come to the aid of the civilian population after a natural disaster. They are also responsible for cooking, growing food for the armed forces and the supply chain in campaign. A Tercio de Intendencia is formed of:

  • 10’000 to 40’000 legionaries (depending on the size of the military base)
  • 129 to 500 administrative officers
  • 1’000 to 5'000 various trucks
  • 50 to 2’000 transport helicopters

They receive the same personal equipment any other soldier would receive in campaign and have the protection of either a cavalry or an artillery legion. Tercios are also subdivided into Centurias and all the other standard divisions of a legion, thus when they are needed in combat (in a dire situation when the survival of the country is in danger) they may be rearranged into Infantry Legions.

Movilization

Although the present-day Army exists as an all volunteer force, augmented by Reserve and National Guard forces, measures exist for emergency expansion in the event of a catastrophic occurrence, such as a large scale attack against Vassfforcia or the outbreak of a major global war. The current "call-up" order of the Ducal Army is as follows:

1. Vassfforcian Expeditionary Force
2. Regular Legions
3. Total mobilization of the Reserve Legions
4. First mobilization of the National Guard (only people in active service, from 18 to 25 years-old)
5. Recall of all retired personnel fit for military duty
6. Second mobilization of the National Guard (people between 17 and 30 years-old who still form part of the it)
7. Recall of previously discharged officers and enlisted who were separated under honorable conditions.
8. Full-scale mobilization of the National Guard (people between 16 and 50 years-old who still form part of the it)
9. Activation of the unorganized Vassfforcian militia

The final stage of Army mobilization, known as "activation of the unorganized militia" would effectively place all able bodied males in the service of the Vassfforcian Army. This has never been the situation.
