Historical Background

Durass was formed when several tribes were united by the "Rat der Häuser" or "Council of the Houses." At that time, the young nation was embroiled in many wars with it's neighbors and it's borders were constantly changing. The tendency was to expand in one direction while relinquishing the land on the opposite side of the nation. Interestingly, as they carried out this migration by combat, other tribes, either conquered or nearby, joined Der Häuser as the loose nation of warriors became known.

Eventually, due to the constant moving of the "nation," all connection with a homeland was lost and the nation became a nomadic mercenary force, taking up residence in and fighting on behalf of other nations. Referred to as "Councils" these agreements or employments continued for almost two millennia until the great religious wars.

The beliefs of the Der Häuser were tribal in nature, primarily ancestral and animal spirit worship with a few tribes adding various gods of war, hunting, competition, feasting and/or chance. While there were occasional frictions with the religious leaders of their various hosts, the services provided by the Der Häuser meant the government would keep the priests in check.

With the religious wars however, the priests began to dominate their governments and enforce religion upon whole nations. Soon, the friction between Der Häuser and their employers increased. At the time, the Council was held with several allied nations and the Der Häuser had been given a large island as their home. The nations of the council were surreptitiously brought under control of a single theocrat who decided that Der Häuser needed to be brought into the fold. He called forth the Council and demanded oaths of fealty, not just to the nations of the Council but, to their god as well. The leaders of Der Häuser refused stating the council was their oath of service and nothing more could be promised. After the leaders left the meeting, all of Der Häuser was branded as heretics and an army was dispatched to enforce their conversion or put them to the sword. That army never returned from the island and the Der Häuser took the ships and sailed away to the east.

The Der Häuser once again took up their nomadic ways and traveled to many regions of the world. They took over uninhabited areas or inhabited ones and continued to improve their warcraft. In the process, additional peoples and martial technologies were added and slowly the predominate language became English. At some point, Der Häuser became Durhasser and eventually Durass.

The other main effect of the religious wars was a general decline amongst the people of belief in the supernatural. Every foe they faced seemed to claim favoured status with some gods and all fell and bled like any other. While the younger generations still honoured their ancestors as great warriors, the reverence no longer included worship and within half a millennia, all religion had disappeared from Durassian society.

Finally, almost three and a half millenia after "Rat der Häuser," the nation of Durass settled in the region of Canada where they exist to this day.
