Elisabeth, Countess Wismar
|
Her Royal Highness Princess Elisabeth of Alessandri, Countess Wismar (Elisabeth Frances Mary Luisa Viktoria Anna), (April 3, 1643 - January 30, 1703) was the firstborn child of King Eduard IV and Queen Frances of Alessandri.
Childhood
Princess Elisabeth was the firstborn of King Eduard IV of Alessandri. Because she was a girl, she was not given the title of Heir Apparent, or even Heiress Presumptive, although she was permitted the title Prinzessin Royal, reserved for the eldest daughter of the reigning soverign.
War of the Blood Royal
During the chaotic events of the War of the Blood Royal, opponents of Prince Philipp's claim to the throne of Alessandri attempted to stage a coup and declare Elisabeth Queen. Despite his repeated attempts to dispose of his sister, her supporters had grown in number, and wanted to abolish the law barring females from inheriting and grant full primogeniture, allowing Elisabeth, as the firstborn child, to inherit the throne.
Marriage and Children
In November 1674, shortly after Philipp's accension to the throne, Elisabeth was forced into a quick marriage with Alexander, Count Wismar. However, to her younger brother's fury, Alexander and Elisabeth quickly fell in love. Their marriage was happy, and together they had four children: Irene Frances (1675), Andreas (1676), Theodor (1678) and Wilhelm (1702).
Death
She was buried at the Royal Masoleum near Schloss Hanover.
