Komunumo Espes (the Community of Espes) or Espes is a small nation comprised of seven islands in the south Pacific. There are no native population, all of its inhabitants moved when they were purchased by the Espes Foundation which is a scientific foundation dedicated to promotion of the scientific method around the world.

Official language

Its official language is Esperanto which is used as a common language between its citizen's diverse backgrounds. In addition to Esperanto, the major languages of the world are identified as the 12 "working languages" in which the citizens of Espes are suggested to have a working knowleadge of: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian. Although knowleadge of a foreign language is encouraged, it is suggested that when communicating with a speaker of another language, Esperanto should be used. This is believed would help bridge people across the language barrier as well as maintaining diversity.

Government

La fundaĵo (the Foundation) is the governing body of the Community. La fundaĵo promotes the use of the scientific method because it is believed it is the most neutral method in the search for knowleadge. The scientific method is applied in all aspects of the daily life of a citizen of Espes. Although la fundaĵo promotes the scientific method, it also warns of not dismissing non-scientific methods as false. La fundaĵo believes all human knowleadge should be regarded as equal, whether it be science, mysticism, religion, meta-science, it all belongs to a part of the overall human experience. All life, including human, plant, animal, microscopic organisms are considered equals and are treasured equally. La fundaĵo follows closely but not restricted to the «Fundamental Theory of Existence» and acts accordingly.

The Community does not have a capital, although there are principal cities on several of the islands, because it is believed that in this way, central governmental areas will not become more important and developped than smaller regional areas, and would be developped equally and naturally. La fundaĵo neither has a seat of meeting. When a meeting is scheduled, a hotel or a conference area and sometimes even the beach are chosen as the place of the meeting.

The citizens play an active part in the government, voting is compulsory, and under the "Voice Your Opinion" program, any citizen has the right to attend a meeting of la fundaĵo and voice their opinions, even participating actively in the decisions. This is because it is believed that the individual citizen should make decisions for themselves, and the citizen should not enter in any form of "social contract" and allow another person to make decisions for them.

When an issue arises, la fundaĵo reviews and debates the issue, then the issue is announced to the public as well as a suggested decision along with an explanation of the suggested decision by la fundaĵo. The issue is then given a time to be thought over by the public. After which, a national voting is conducted in which every citizen of adult age votes.

National animal

The national animal is the turtle in esteem of its calmness, steadfastness, and sagacity.

Currency

The currency is the kredito (credit), plural is kreditoj (credits). Bills and coins are printed but are little used and will soon be abolished altogether. Each working citizen holds a tabula rasa (clean slate), plural tabulae rasae (clean slates), in which kreditoj could be added or subtracted. After work, the pay is paid daily, and charged directly onto the worker's tabula rasa. When something is purchased the tabula rasa is swiped, and the amount is subtracted from the tabula rasa, the amount is recorded in the system along with the date of purchase, the buyer has the option of jotting down notes of what the purchase was, or the buyer could also select the "Other" option. This is somewhat like a checkbook used to combat fraud, and identity theft.

The tabula rasa looks similar to a credit card, however somewhat thicker and much more sophisticated. On the obverse, front and side portrait photos of the holder are shown, along with signature, ID number, finger print, and the words "NOSCE TE IPSVM (Know thyself.)", similar to USD's "In God We Trust."; On the reverse is a swipe along with a retinal map of the right eye. The tabula rasa charger is a lot more sophisticated. It includes an eye scan, used for scanning both eyes upon purchase, and a hand print scan to scan either the left or right hand, although the right hand is preferred. In the case in which a holder of a tabula rasa could not complete these ID scans (an amputee, the blind...), another method is used for identification.

The first and second series of tabulae rasae and tabulae rasae chargers were produced by Microsoft Corporation, while the last two series (third and fourth), have been produced domestically by Epsilon Foundation (la fundaĵo's micro-science department).
