Ferretus

History

Prior to 1100 CE, Ferretus was inhabited by Stone Age nomads. A group of knights on the way either to or from a crusade (it's rather hard to tell from existing evidence) were forced to land, their ships running low on supplies, and as they could not leave, the city of Kingston was founded in 1100.

Walter Kenelm came to power in February 2003 (CE), elected by the people, and took the title of "Head of State" in the then "Authoritian Democracy". Shortly after he came to power, he headed a dictatorship, which, if demonstrators protested the government or much of anything else, were crushed. In March or April 2003, Islamic fundamentalists from the group Soldiers of Allah attempted to assassinate him, sending a suicide bomber against him (the suicide bomber was slain by members of the 666th Corps) and detonating a car-bomb in government parking garage. In addition, terrorists (the motive has never been discovered) took control of Kingston International Airport and several other nations sent help (one nation sent anti-terrorist forces, while another nation sent marijuana, which was seized by Fertusian Customs Officials). A sniper from the 666th Corps slew the terrorist leader and the anti-terrorist forces regained control of the airport and freed the hostages. At the time the attack was believed to have something to do with seperatists from the eastern islands, but nobody to this day is really certain. In mid-June 2003 the nation fell into chaos (population at the time was around 569 million) and nobody heard of it again.

Military At the moment, with the poor economy (as opposed to the Frightening Economy of yesteryear), the Ferretian military is little more than hordes of men armed with a variety of rifles (The army was never able to decide on or design a native rifle; attempts were made to design a 12.7 mm assault rifle, but it failed) and various Ferretian-designed aircraft, while the navy and armor tend to use equipment that the designs were purchased on the international market (such as RL US equipment renamed). Ferretus usually had a more powerful Army and Air Force than Navy. Military service is compulsory, with military service required from the time one leaves high school (16 at the earliest) to the age of 20, after which military service is optional. If one is disabled or otherwise unable to serve, they simply do not serve.

Government Currently the nation is ruled by a descendent of Walter Kenelm (or so it is rumored), but the bulk of the populace really has no idea who rules. For the bulk of Ferretus' modern history, you could just about call the government 'fascist'.

Foreign Relations Ferretus largely kept to itself, and hardly ever had anything to do with other nations. However, it did aid the government of one nation drive back rebels marching on the government offices (which was later regretted, being that Ferretus has an intense dislike of Communism and all ideolgies of the left and this nation happened to be a leftist state), and also had friendly relations with one primitive nation still at the medieval level. However Ferretus is fervently isolationist at the moment, as it usually is.
