Geeklove
The Most Serene Republic of Geeklove is a huge, socially progressive nation, renowned for its compulsory vegetarianism. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 207 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, the Environment, and Defence. The average income tax rate is 47%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.
Crowds of flag-burning protesters tend to accidentally become crowds of burning protesters, people are now classified as male, female, or genderqueer, sex offenders find themselves 'cut off' from any ability to repeat their crimes, and all mothers are allowed six months fully-paid maternity leave. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Geeklove's national animal is the stag, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the buck.
