The island of what is now gelfland was inhabited in ancient times by a race of small goatlike humanoids, their society was nearly wiped out prior to an event refered to as the Reunification, apparently a reference to some now extict race. the art of this group incudes numerous depictions of cabbits, but it is unknown wether these creatures were brought to the island by them or were domesticated there.
these beings, officialy known as "predesessor baselines" accepted a small band of genetically engineered beings fleeing from their creators, who sought to produce a race of test subjects for unspeakable experiments. In time, came others, some seeking freedom, and, after a case of one scientist finding the island, and stating he had clearly "played god and lost" to continue their work, in an environment far less judgemental of their activites.
almost any religion is tolerated, provided they meet environmental standards. formulated in the wake of a massive outbreak of lysergic acid poisoning caused by the rituals of the fluffy cloud sect of the order of the cosmic muffin. it should be noted that a portion of the population holds a devotion to creating the "perfect" being as fanatical as any religion.
although some tension has always existed between the researchers, the decendants of the creations, and the native baselines, it is rarely an issue of great importance, almost all citizens regarding each other as equals.
more recent happenings include the decision to declare the Thra system a independant political entity. and the commensement of the "grand quest" for the True Crystal refenced in ancient legends.
