Present Information

The Allied States of Glennahlen is a relatively new nation, formed out of seven formerly independent nations: Kenforth, Charlesmont, Servexia, Landston, Rochester, Northdown, and Fenton. Banding together in 1994 under a unified Constitution, the seven states agreed that their interests would be best served as a unified nation. Ranging from the coastal, commercial republics of Northdown, Fenton, and Rochester, to former monarchies like Servexia and Charlesmont, the seven nations have affirmed the constitution through three separate votes. The seven nations became seven states, and a new state was formed out of portions of Northdown, Rochester, and Kenforth; Glennahlen. Formerly home to an ancient kingdom, Glennahlen is central on the coastline, and was chosen as the capital of the new nation, which took the name of the town. In the years since, Glennahlen has undergone blistering expansion, with government workers and businesses from all over the new country flocking to the capital.

Government

Glennahlen is ruled by two main branches of government. The first is the Great Council of the Eight States, which functions as the executive body. With nine members, one elected to serve ten years from each state plus the Prime Minister, the Great Council is chaired by the President of the Great Council, elected by the council every two years. The current President is Michael Fenston, the Councilman from Charlesmont.

The Great Council has authority over defence, foreign policy, and other normal executive powers. Each Councilman is usually given a certain area of government he is responsible for, functioning as a cabinet member does in many democracies.

The second branch of government is Parliament. The Glennahlen Parliament is composed of a Senate of 47 members and a House of Commons of 422 members. Parliament is in charge of the national budget and lawmaking. Any law must be approved by the Great Council, however all laws originate in Parliament. Parliament is led by the Prime Minister, generally chosen from the largest party. The Prime Minister receives a seat on the Great Council, and has overall authority over judicial matters.
