Brief Description
The Most Serene Republic of Golden Wing rests on a large island in the middle of a vast archipelago located in the North Atlantic.
History
In a sense, Golden Wing owes its existance to human intolerance. Evey single person is either a political refugee or a descendant of one.
The first wave of settlers came from Europe during the Middle Ages. Most were people persecuted by their religion as well as those who feared being declared witches. The first recorded settlement was founded around 1673 by Captain Martin Scheuler, former member of the British Royal Navy. The settlers arrived on five stolen vessels, a third-rate, three fourth-rates and a sixth-rate. Around 2000 settlers arrived in this first wave, though there is evidence of at least 5000 already being on the island. The houses for the first official wave were wooden, built out of the cannibalised ships.
Since that time, several waves of refugees have arrived on the island. Others also ended up on the ring of islands encircling Golden Wing, forming the other countries of the region.
It was around 1805 that bands of settlers started to encounter each other. Remembering the hate that had brought them all here, they agreed to work together for the greater good. It was this attitude that allowed those on the island to make their technological advances.
In 1918 a Russian fleet lead by Admiral Alexei Malokov landed on the island. Malokov's settlers added several of their personal military slang into the Golden Wing dialect, evolving it into what is now known as Clan English.
Being able to focus on peace, Golden Wing's technology quickly outpaced the rest of the world. By the time the first sattelite camera was orbiting the globe, Golden Wing had already developed a type of cloaking shield to mask their presence from the rest of the world. It was only in late-2005 that the Island revealed it's presence to the world.
Politics
Government
Golden Wing's national government consists of three branches: the Council, the Senate and the Kurultai. For any resolution to be passed it must be approved by at least half of the Council and Senate each as well as have unanimous approval from the Kurultai.
Council
Parliament consists of 309 Councillors elected on a representation by population system. The party that forms the majority in Council chooses a Council Speaker who mediates the debate as well as sit as a member of the Kurultai.
Senate
Senate consists of 75 Senators, elected 5 per province. The party that forms the majority in the Senate elects a Senatorial Speaker who meidates the debate as well as sit as a member of the Kurultai.
Kurultai
The Kurultai consists of 19 members: the President, Council Speaker, Senatorial Speaker, Supreme Commander of the Touman and the Premiers from all 15 provinces. In times of national emergency, Council and Senate are shut down and the Kurultai holds supreme power.
