Early Years
Her Highness was born at the Furtz Palace at was raised both there, and, after 1980, at 100 Mahlberg Court, as her mother, Her Former Highness Romaine Diana of Toremal, and Lady of Mahlberg, split from her husband, Grand Duke Alexander. For political reasons, theynever divorced, and publicaly retained the image of a happy family. Her younger sister, Hereditary Grand Duchess Alexandra was born in 1979, and was the 'apple of her mother's eye'. it is perhaps the result of her bitter childhood that she is awkward in public, and yet seeks to be admired and loved by all - this often clouds her political judgements.
As Grand Duchess
Her Highness, after a magnificent coronation, publicy welcomed her sister back into the royal fold, and set about taking over the Government, where she is now considered to be Toremal's Iron Lady. With her father's ammassed wealth, she set about buying as much land as she could, until she was feudal lord of nearly everyone in the country (as evidenced by her titles) and the Government was powerless to stop her. She has made Toremal into one of the most 'green' counties on the planet, and continues that policiy today. There has been no wars during her reign, and few strikes - only among bikers. Her current heir is Hereditary Grand Duchess Alexandra - but if she marries, her husband and then daughter will become the heir (women count before men in Toremals succession.)
After the Exile of Hereditary Grand Duchess Alexandra
After what is commonly known as the Ctani Exile HRH has become increasingly difficult, leading some to believe that she suffers from an unamed malady. She has become fart more the dictator, and her popularity, which was at an all time high at the beginning of her reign, has now decreased significantly. There have even beeen talks of a forced abdication - indeed, the only thing stopping it is the sucession issue - women should suceed first, but the one who holds the title is in permanent exile in The Ctan, and has expressed a wish never to become Grand Duchess of Toremal - though she also has experience, as Queen of San Maritia. The other candidate is His Exellency the 'kid brother' of the two women, Prince Alexander of Toremal, Mayor of Torembourg and Chancellor of th realm. He, too, supports his sister Alexandra over Maria.
Personal Life
In her private life, the Grand Duchess has no interest whatsoever in cultural or arty subjects, and has never had a relationship with anybody. When all her family still lived in Toremal and/or San Maritia she never attended the family holidays, prefering to remain aloof.
Death of Grand Duchess Maria
On July 31st, grand Duchess Maria was found murederd at 100 Mahlberg Court. She died without naming an heir, and the succession issue si still in doubt. Foreign countries have been invited to give their opinions. Here.
