With the advent of cryogenic hibernation technology a colony ship was dispatched to Upsilon Andromedae, the nearest known planetary system of the era. The colony was composed of the best and brightest of a generation, as well as equipment to set up a colony on the surface of one of the planets.
The long journey was uneventful, and the ship arrived without incident. However, when the colonists attempted to retrieve the message they found the volatile memory had failed and lost contact with Earth. Deploying their power satellite and establishing their colony, they slowly created an atmosphere and developed faster-than-light travel.
