Hebrides Islandia

Region: Archipelago

Population: 600+ Million

Leader: Jonas R. Caesar, President

Population Breakdown

Caucasian: 42%

Islandian (Native Hebrides Islandians, similar to Polynesians): 26%

African: 14%

Asian: 18%

Male: 48%

Female: 52%

Age of Majority: 18

Avg. Life Expectancy: 91.3 years

Avg. Male Life Expectancy: 89.7 years

Avg. Female Life Expectancy: 92.9 years

Despite the caucasian "majority," there is remarkably little racial strife. The overall focus of the nation on econmic prosperity and expansion led to a focus on using all the individuals in the nation to the best capacity possible, there is little institutionalized discrimination. Jonas Caesar is Islandian, and won a popular election with 68% majority.

Economy

The Hebrides Islandia government practices a hands-off approach to market controls, and allows corporations to do whatever they need within broad ethical guidelines (no corporations are allowed to mistreat workers (within reason), accrue large private security forces, engage in any practice that would be illegal for private citizens, etc.)

There is no national tax, and the government collects its budget through tariffs and import/export deals.

The current GDP of Hebrides Islandia is naer $19 trillion, with a $2 trillion national budget. The greatest expenditure on the part of the government is Law & Order, which supports the large National Police force, and Defense.

Landscape

Hebrides Islandia is located on a central peninsula that is surrounded by an series of smaller, but still sizable, islands that currently have several cities and commercial installations on them. There are a series of forests and the large Caledon Jungle that stretches through part of the southern peninsula itself. Before colonization, native Islandians held the jungle as sacred and therefore there was little logging during the early years of Hebrides Islandia.

Major Cities

New Glasgow: Population 18.6 Million

New Glasgow is the capital of Hebrides Islandia, and the home of its most important government departments, including the Parliament, the Presidential Palace, and most of the national administration. It located inland on the central peninsula that is surrounded by rolling countryside which was once used for large scale farming, and has been turned into a nature preserve. Transportation in and around the city is done using either the rail system that has a series of stations at major thouroughfares, or by automobile. An special license is distributed to each vehicle driven in the city to facilitate traffic managment. New Glasgow holds the Michael Caesar International Airport and five smaller airfields: McMannus, Gamble, Rolling Hills, Glenfiddich, and MacTeigh. McMannus and Glenfiddich are the smaller airfields that can accomidate jet planes, the other airfields are used for helicopters or small propeller driven planes.

The overall design philosophy in New Glasgow is up rather than out, and as a result there are few buildings that are less than ten stories tall. The largest building is the Islandia Computer Technologies skyscraper, 104 stories tall. It is the ICT corporate headquarters, and ICT is the largest corporation in the nation. They have diversivied from Information Technology services to arms, automobile and avionics manufacture, as well as agribusiness and a large forestry division.

New Glasgow is also near Fort Freedonia, the nation's military headquarters.

Port Edinburgh: Population 8.5 Million

Port Edinburgh was until the recent military expansion the base for the small Hebrides Islandia navy. It currently uses the old naval base as an extensive waterfront for commercial shipping operations. Port Edinburgh is also the base for the country's refinery system, handling 75% of all oil imports due to the presence of Edinburgh Oil, the largest petroleum company in the nation. Located on the southeast of the peninsula, it is below the Caledon Jungle and remains a major seaport despite a recent terrorist attack at the Campbell Coast Guard Station 5 miles outside of the city proper. Port Edinburgh has its new docks, 3 smaller marinas, 2 small airports and the newly-renamed Campbell International Airport.

The National Police presence has stepped up as a result of the terrorist attack, and a greater number of High Threat Response Teams (crack police units, similar to SWAT teams) have deployed there. APCs with NP markings are not uncommon sights at major installations or crossroads.

Unlike New Glasgow, Edinburghers prefer space so the city has a large number of suburbs, making it the country's largest city by area. These suburbs tend to have independent city councils, fire departments, police departments, and city services.

Andrewstown: Population 6.4 Million

Andrewstown is the largest city in the northern part of the nation, and the most cosmopolitan. Near the only land border in Hebrides Islandia it has long been a destination point for emigration. It is the base of the national rail system, as well as most of the land export businesses in Hebrides Islandia. This makes it the one of the most affluent of all the cities in Hebrides Islandia. The architecture here is eclectic at best, but it is home to a planned arcology site and the nationally famous Mall of Hebrides Islandia, the largest shopping center in country.

Andrewstown is also home to Beaufort University, the nation's most acclaimed higher learning institute. It houses a great deal of sensitive national and corporate research in such fields as bioengineering, airplane design and manufacture, chemical engineering and nuclear physics.

Copper Hill: Population 165,000

Copper Hill was a very small town before the National Police located their headquarters here. Located in the center of the city, the sprawling National Police Central Headquarters is the focal point for the city. The local police department has been replaced by National Police divisions, and the best trained and equiped policemen outside of New Glasgow can be found here.
