Overview

The Thallasocratic Nation of Japanese Antarctica is a military dictatorship headed by a benevolent emperor. The mostly benevolent government has a priority of defense and commerce. It is most well known for its grand navy, automobile exports, acceptable civil rights and sub-standard political freedoms. Currently, its activity in international politics is waning, and is member to only loose alliances, although it is the founder of the World Capitalist and Communist Consortium, an organization devoted to peace between the two opposing economic philosophies.

History

After the encounter with Commodore Matthew Perry, the island nation of Japan opened its borders and began exploration. On 1895, a group of five Japanese ships set sail soutward. The expedition was intended to explore landmasses in the southern hemisphere, but by chance, the ships completely missed the intended target of Australia, and continued to sail south. Eventually, the group reached the icy waters of Antarctica and landed. However, the bitter cold and harsh conditions forced them to turn back, and one of the ships sank after striking an iceberg. The expeditionaries came back with the news of an uninhabited land ripe for conquering. In 1932, the Empire again set sail for the original landing point, marked 69°00'22"S, 39°35'24"E. However, they were again unsuccessful in staying for extended periods of time. By then, the only reason for Japanese ships to visit was for the whaling industry.

Distracted by World War II and its loss, Japan did not return to that point until 1989, when Syowa Station was founded for scientific research. Several other stations, such as Asuka, Mizuho and Fuji were built. In 1991, a proposal was made to create an experimental colony that could sustain a population for long periods of time, in the spirit of the 1932 expedition. Syowa Station was transformed into a small town, and a biosphere was constructed. Population grew slowly at first, but in the year 2004, the population reached a full six million citizens. Faced with a budget crisis, the Japanese Government allowed the Japanese Antarcticans to form their own seperate country, with Syowa as their capitol.

Conflicts

The most notable conflicts involving Japanese Antarctica are the Soviet Expanse wars. In the first of the two wars, Japanese Antarctica sought to liberate its ally, Vladimir Stremouchov from the occupation of the CAD, which had illegally infringed on the sovreignty of the Soviet Expanse. Vladimir Stremouchov called upon a coaltion to help push back the invaders. The conflict was resolved when Vladimir Stremouchov offered a sum of money to the CAD in exchange for their withdrawal from his lands.

The Second Soviet Expanse War was spearheaded by Japanese Antarctica. The CAD failed to make good on its side of the original treaty by failing to evacuate its army from the Soviet Expanse. Again, the coalition was pitted against the CAD. One key aspect of this war was the destruction of the CAD Navy by Japanese Antarctican planes, by a sneak attack similar in fashion to the Pearl Harbor bombings. The Second Soviet Expanse War ended in a coalition victory.

Present

Japanese Antarctica has made sweeping changes in the areas of civil and political freedoms. During the reign of current Emperor Okura Ryusaki, many restrictive laws were abolished, granting the citizens new and unheard of rights. Political freedoms were also increased, albeit only slightly. The Japanese Antarctican economy has also experienced growth since its beginning, but still maintains its strength in Automobile Exports and Arms Manufacturing.
