Kharanjul is a small nation famous for its oppressiveness. In the past it was organized into many clans that rampaged through nations like Czardas and Omnis Parnassa, causing havoc and murder. Finally the clans got together after years of warfare, and the clan heads picked a king. The king at first was a benevolent autocrat, allowing his people to keep whatever they could plunder. But later kings were not so nice. When the Cvarken settled down in the mountainous region that would become Kharanjul, the king demanded total tribute from everyone. Tax rates were 100%, and practically everything was outlawed.
Nowadays, Kharanjul is not ruled by a king. But the ruler is king in all but name. And his laws are as oppressive as those of the early kings, or more. If people even think about protesting against the government, the Secret Police soon pay them a visit. Usually no mention of that person is ever made again; for all practical purposes he never existed. However, Kharanjul was determined to rule a much larger territory than just its small, mountainous land. It began space exploration in the 1950s, and within twenty years had built a huge space station in the orbit of the earth. With new technology developed in the later 1980s, the station became permanently inhabited, and shuttles and transport ships were sent to the larger of Terra's two moons, which the Kharanjians named Takamin, where they built a thriving colony which gained autonomy as Kharanmin. Kharanjul is now looking towards Czardas's territories on Luna, Terra's other moon, for colonization.

The Borderlands of Kharanjul is a massive, devout nation, remarkable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 592 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."
The omnipresent, moralistic, corrupt government concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Defence and Religion & Spirituality are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 100%, but much higher for anti-government dissenters. The private sector is mainly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is attempting to crack down on them as well.
People regularly disappear off the streets and all evidence of them is destroyed, elections have been outlawed, all industry is run and owned by the government, and citizens are barcoded to keep track of their movements. Crime is low, despite the fact that it is difficult to make it through a day without breaking one of the country's many laws. Kharanjul's national animal is the kharanjian viper, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the taka taka.
