Latrans is a relatively new nation, founded by the anthropomorphic genetic experiments of a megacorporation. The citizens of Latrans are all canid-human hybrids created to be an easily replaceble, but effective security force for the more clandestine operations of aforementioned megacorporation. After several test populations suffered a genetic mutation, granting them cognitive sentinence and a more willfull disposition the company began to worry about their project. Fearing that their "pets" might feel ill disposed to the callous treatment from their creators, the company killed the project. Several researchers and the more coherently intelligent cainites worked together to smuggle as many cainites out of the country before they could be euthanized. Those survivors, and their subsequent descendants worked hard to create a peaceful land for themselves in the zombie infested isles of south pong, where no human would willingly go for fear of becoming one of the walking dead.
During the formative decades of their nation, a human monk named Zeek, traveled through the region and happened to leave behind a few copies of the book, The Art of Shen Ku. Those cainites that read it, believed in its teachings so strongly that it soon became a social trend which lead to the development of the nation of Latrans as it is today. A society of travelers, explorers and innovators.
While technologically backward compared to some societies, Latrans manufactured items are nearly unbreakable. Comprised of solid state technology that can operate anywhere by nearly anyone they often fetch high prices when exported to undeveloped or "survivalist" nations. While electronics, and other high technology products are produced within the boundaries of Latrans, the supply rarely meets the demand and there is no export traffic in electronics, automotives, or nuclear power worth mentioning.
The Tail, which is the national currency of Latrans is a small bill made of synthetic fibers and printed on one side with a picture of a coyote's tail and on the other shows the Directorate House. Generally though most cainites do not seek material wealth. Prefering a nomadic lifestyle makes it difficult to carry large sums of money and possessions with them when they decide to pull up roots and move to a new location somewhere else in Latrans. As such, many homes consist of junks set up as mobile apartments along the waterways that criscross many of the major cities in Latrans.
Racial tensions, while not as much of a hot-bed as in other nations still plays a part in Latran life, as several different canine breeds where used to create the hybrid cainites. Stereotypes of red furred cainites being overlly sexually aggressive, or black cainites being violent still have a grip in the minds of many cainites, though the government is doing its best to reduce the amount of profiling going on among the citizenry.
The National Beverage of Latrans is green tea with a cube of frozen aloe juice or two. Promotes both good health and good taste. Neutering and spaying is not only illegal within the borders of Latrans, in most circles it is considered barbaric and unnatural.
Education: Education starts early in Latrans, pups start school at the age of two, learning language, mathematics, health, and literature. At the age of thirteen, after the tenth grade, students must serve their military time after which, they may continue their public education for another three years, learning higher mathematics, philosophy, medicine and manufacturing skills or postpone their final schooling indefinitely by serving additional stretches of military time. Colleges specializes first and foremost on the humanities with smaller colleges dedicated to scientific and business studies. Those pups that choose to postpone schooling through additional years of service in the military still must finish the last three years of high school before becoming eligible for college, there is no such thing as a GED in Latrans, its pass or fail.
Military Service: Starting after the tenth grade all pups must attend a six month boot camp training, followed by a year of service in one of the three branches of the Latran Military. Boot camp includes familiarization with the cleaning, repairing and use of the Augustus-Steyr composite weapon system, the most commonly seen foreign firearms and in the armed and unarmed defensive styles taught within the Art of Shen Ku.
Service in the merchant marines includes a nine month tour accompanying cargo and diplomatic missions overseas, interspersed with three months of further military training excercises. Service in the coastal mobile guard includes guerilla tactics training along the coast, and the wiping out of colonies of zombies along the coast to maintain the safety of the shore. Service in the National Defense Corps. includes training in quick response measures, piloting training and tank killing, they also work as a police force within the country, maintaining the safety of the cities from the zombies that still remain lose upon those isles within the confines of Latrans territory. At the end of a pup's service time, they may choose to return to public schooling for another three years or postpone such schooling indefinitely by serving in the military, where other skills and knowledges are sharpened. Dishonoroble discharge, or refusal to serve within the military, carries the penalty of non-adult status, the cainite may never vote, consume alcohol, or be parent of a child, along with a few other rights reserved for adults only.
The national anthem of Latrans is Unknown by Metallica though there is a small percentage of the population that believe that it should be Rogue by Sub Level 03.
