Magistratia
The Holy Empire of Magistratia is a growing nation in the Union of Wise States, which it founded. The leader is Ductor Gnaeus Aurelius Maximus, a "benevolent" dictator who aims at bettering the land. Although they don't enjoy many political freedoms, such as voting, the government claims that this is because the leadership doesn't want a system of "mob rule" where the democratic majority might oppress individuals. The absolute rule of the government still allows for many civil liberties to be enjoyed by the people, and rarely prevents anyone from enjoying those rights. Capitalism is banned.
History of Magistratia
Magistratia, along with Subternosh and Haelsgard, was once part of the Magisterian Empire. The Empire officially broke apart when Germanic barbarians invaded the northern province Hupernia, renamed it Haelsgard, or the Glorious Guard, and claimed victory and independence. After losing the battle to the Germanic tribes, Magisteria then was controlled by General Titus Aurelius. Quintus Valerius Scerio, the general of Subtergnosica, then went renegade and declared war on the capital. Instead of a long, drawn out battle, Titus Aurelius' troops assassinated him and declared peace between the two nations. Titus' son, Gnaeus Aurelius, then subsumed power of Magisteria. After a few small battles, Gn. Aurelius allowed Subtergnosica to break free.
The Magistratian Culture
The Teachings of the Magister play a large part in Magistratia. The government has shown preference to the Spoletan understanding of the Magister which is heavily militaristic and nationalistic, opposed to the Scerionian philosophy, which resembles a cross between asceticism and Daoism. The early years of the reign of Gn. Aurelius was environmental and community-oriented, but with a slouching economy the focus turned to business and making money. Magistratians now are more feverously nationalistic than before, and anyone who isn't is seen as anti-Magister.
Magistratia and the Economy
Magistratia was fast becoming the poorest nation in the Union, but recently, with an increased spending for defense, they're creating more jobs to boost the economy, but without the stigma of losing men to fight a war. Social welfare and healthcare, though, still are top priorities, with education being transferred over to defense as the conscripts are gaining new opportunities for their future through the military instead of traditional means. Their economy is now on the rise, and they are second-best in the region.
Magistratia in the UN
Magistratia briefly was in the United Nations, but citing too much pressure on their authoritarian government to become democratic, and also valuing their defense forces pushed them to leave. They currently are pursuing nuclear energy and possibly an arsenal barring them from returning to the UN.
Relations with the Union of Wise States
Magistratia resigned as the delegate to the United Nations and decided to pursue its own nuclear program without the consent of the rest of the UWS. The Democratic States of Subternosh, which stepped up as the new leader of the UWS, condemned Magistratia and threatened to sever ties with the nation. Subternosh's president, Q. Valerius Scerio, is highly favored in Magistratia, and the government acknowledges this, but is still cautious, claiming that Scerio "does not have to live in these conditions" of poverty and a crippling economy. Most officials in Magistratia brush of the severing promise of Scerio, claiming that he is "too compassionate" to do anything drastic against the nation. But top officials in Subternosh claim that if diplomacy fails, they would take unprecedented action against the once too-friendly nation. Currently, there is a joint project with Magistratia, Subternosh, and the Democratic Republic of Haelsgard to maintain a peacefuly UWS.
More recently, a small mountainous area in between Subternosh and Magistratia was granted joint independence by both countries. The region calls itself Romakja after the both countries' cultural influence. The move was heralded by both leaders as a step towards peace in the union. However, some in Subternosh claim that Romakja is merely a satellite nation that Magistratia is controlling. Gn. Aurelius denies this charge.
