Maniacalia
Founding
Maniacalia, founded by the Romans in 108 B.C., was originally called Caput Lucerta ("Head of the Lizard") due to its location at the end of a reptile-shaped peninsula that extends into Folium Bay in The United Lands of Trinculo.
Motto
The motto "Maniacalia Praesum Orbis Terrarum" ("Maniacalia at the Head of the World") became associated with the nation around 1150 A.D., and though its obvious inspiration is Maniacalia's local geography, it also undoubtedly refers to the enormous cathedral in the center of the southern city of Hic Modo that was completed at that time. The huge octuple cross floor plan is unique among such gothic structures, and since that time Maniacalia has been the starting point of an annual pilgrimage that winds throughout The United Lands of Trinculo.
Capital City
Lucidus, Maniacalia's current capital city, has only been so for the last 50 years. Among other cities that have served that function in the past are Canis Rideo, Insula Equinus (located on an island in Folium Bay) and Silentium.
Industries
The woodlands populating the southern regions support a thriving woodchips export industry, while the recent surge of interest in alcohol-burning automobile engines has been partially engendered by Maniacalia's leadership in the design of such engines and the formulation of such liquid transport fuels as ethanol and methanol, wood alcohols readily obtainable from Maniacalia's dense forests. Woven baskets are a major export.
Music
The Maniacalian culture is known for its appreciation of long forms of instrumental music (known in Maniacalia as "sonitus magnus"). For as far back as the nation's recorded history reaches there has been a tradition of yearly holidays devoted to listening to musical pieces that can last from half an hour to several hours. An internet broadcasting station named Nspace, broadcasting from both Canis Rideo and New York City, features music of this type twenty-four hours a day.
Currency
For the last two centuries the nation's currency has been the liberali. Both bank notes and coins are in circulation. Recently there have been debates about suggestions put forth by some business action committees to replace some of the low-denomination bank notes with high-denomination coins.

Leader
Since 1968 Maniacalia's leader has been King Vorgore I. Born in 1954, he ascended to the throne at the age of 14. His son, Vorgore the Younger, is currently serving as a de facto ambassador of the nation, spending months at a time in various other regions living close to the land, and periodically returning home to relate his experiences to the King and his advisors. He currently resides in the Kingdom of Misthalin.
