Margaret Katherine Delray (born 1 October, 1963, in Al-Bahr, Kahanistan) is a Kahanistanian politician, diplomat, teacher, and currently Vice President of Kahanistan. She was also the 2006 Green Party candidate for President of Kahanistan, receiving roughly 15% of the vote.

Early life

Delray was born in Al-Bahr, Kahanistan, to an educated, secular, middle-class family. She grew up as what might be called a "bookworm", with few friends in her life. As a child, she tended to be more interested in things than people, and was often more at home listening to music and painting than in watching TV with friends or drinking beer in clubs. Her semi-isolation helped her to achieve in school, and at age 12, the minimum age for military training (an officer cadet's training can be as long as eight years, and a twelve-year-old would be 20 by commissioning) a recruiter suggested to her that with her academic achievements she would easily pass the Republic Guard officer training and be commissioned as an officer.

Military experience

At first, Delray fit in at the Academy quite well; she appeared to have an innate talent for concentrating and could easily hit a target with a sniper rifle. However, she grew disillusioned with the idea of cold-bloodedly killing people from a distance; she considered it dehumanizing. For the second year she trained as an infantry officer, but dropped out after the end of her fourth year, with her secondary school diploma. (Kahanistanian military academies offer the secondary school diploma and the bachelor's degree, in addition to military training. This is why the program lasts eight years for a youth; an older student with a high school and / or university degree can complete the military academy curriculum in as little as two years.) She would later get her university education at the University of Kahanistan in Najaster.

First posting

In September 1985, shortly after receiving her bachelor's degree, Delray joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a consular officer in Velkya. She remained there for two years, learning the inner workings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While there, she became interested in the superior environmental condition in Velkya. When she returned to Kahanistan, she began a master's program in environmental science.

Break from diplomacy

Delray worked for much of her time in graduate school and several years after in the Ministry of Health. There, she met and befriended another Kahanistanian scientist and psychologist, Nadine Morgan. Morgan was part of the UKN psychology faculty, and a specialist in abnormal psychology and psychosexual theory. She interested Delray in mass communication, and how people with diplomatic skills could advance if they knew how to reach the masses. They would remain close friends even after Delray left the Health Ministry to pursue her doctorate in mass communication, which she completed in 1995.

The Foreign Ministry

Delray returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995, and this time was assigned to training diplomatic staff in cross-cultural communication. She remained in this position for five years, and later ran unsuccessfully for a Green Party seat on the Supreme Soviet. In 2001 she was made Deputy Foreign Minister, a post she would only hold for two years before the Foreign Minister was killed in a terrorist attack.

As Foreign Minister

Delray staunchly opposes genocide and advocates immediate military intervention when it takes place. She is known to be overtly insulting to politicians who are religious fanatics or whom she considers to be hypocrites. However, she is also soft at heart; a famous news clip has her breaking down in tears as she condemns terrorist group Terror of the World for the brutal murder of a Xirniumite child in order to turn Xirnium against its ally ViZion.

Personal life

Delray is married to Colonel Marcus Lucanus Camilius, an officer in the Republic Guard. They have two sons, Michael (born 1993), and Titus (born 1997).
