The Nation of Maslowniea prides itself on it's commitment to progressive values, peace and stability.

It's Education includes strong schools, high schools and free post-secondary education for all upon completion of their National Service term.

Most medical procedures are covered by the country's comprehensive nationalised medicare system, along with many prescription drugs which are produced generically by nationally owned pharmaceutical companies and private pharmaceutical companies as a condition of doing business in the country. A shortage of doctors and nurses is seen as a strain on the county's health care system, as higher salaries are available abroad. Addiction and STDs are treated as a public health problem, making treatment and harm reduction programs priorities.

Although private enterprise is permitted, and even encouraged, it is heavily regulated, is subject to high taxes, and must compete with strong nationalised industries. A strong labour movement has been present in all aspects of the economy since it played a major role in The Recovery and is seen as a partner by the government in setting the domestic agenda.

Maslowniea's social safety net is designed to maintain the dignity of those who access it. Paid training programs are in place to help workers transition into new work as the economy evolves. Disability and mental health supports help ensure that those who cannot work can live with dignity and contribute to society.

With the quality of life that the heath care, education, social welfare systems and economy contribute to, poverty and crime are rare, but do occur. Maslowniea's justice system focuses on rehabilitation and addressing the root causes of crime in the country, with stiffer penalties reserved for more serious crimes. The relatively low crime rates allow the officers of the country's various police forces to spend substantial amounts of time training and focusing on public safety issues. this increased time for training gives officers the tools they need to respond to many situations professionally and effectively. The country's National Police service, the Maslownian Interior Security Service, works closely with various local departments, but rivalries and jurisdictional disputes often occur. The M.I.S.S. falls under Maslowniea's Department of defence and is responsible for domestic intelligence and counter-terrorism, internal security and border security, investigating major financial crimes, organised crime and other major crime, co-ordinating local police departments in times of national emergency and policing rural areas and Maslowniea's highways.

History

Maslowniea was born out of the decline of it's predecessor nation, The Second Antroan Republic, a state where Corporate and Capitalist interests dictated domestic and foreign policies until the 'Collapse of 2009' plunged the nation into crisis and chaos.

Before the Collapse, The Second Antroan Republic was never shy of using violence and force to protect the hierarchy of power that ensured bottom lines of the country's many corporate interests, but marginalising dissent and opponents through the media, pre-emptive arrests and the unspoken threat of force was found to be much more efficient. The ruling Conservative Alliance Party, essentially the political front for Antroan corporate interests, invoked fears of terrorism and the need for progress and economic growth as justification for it's legislation strengthening security measures, stripping civil rights and privatising most former government services. Although the public never really bought into this, there was an undercurrent of helplessness when it came to their role within the nation, and an attitude that it was better to go along with it then to risk the consequences of demanding change. This ensured that the never faced an effective opposition in parliament and had free reign in domestic and foreign affairs.

Privatisation of everything from healthcare and basic services, to policing turned Antroan cities into virtual "company towns" dominated by whatever corporation had consolidated its interests there and effectually carved up other cities into zones along company lines. The privatised services were, of course, reserved for those who could afford it, and others simply had to make due as best they could without. As the economy continued to grow at an explosive and unsustainable rate, the corporations that had co-operated to create the conditions of this growth started to find themselves in intense competition and conflict with each other for a share of the market and resources. Occasionally, the police forces of these neighbouring zones dominated by one particular company or another, would find themselves in running street battles a competing company's police force when competition got fierce and one corporation tired to expand it's holdings.

Collapse of 2009

To alleviate this growing problem that was nearing crisis, The Second Antroan Republic started to look outward, and became embroiled in a series of conflicts around the globe, obstensively to ensure the security the republic and to spread democracy. The true aim of these actions of course was to secure access to resources and to open foreign markets to Antroan companies. For a time, the Antroan economy continued to grow. But eventually it overextended itself, and a few Antroan corporations began to fall, creating a domino affect that brought down other companies. As the Collapse ran it's course, many residents of urban areas who were able to afford services found that with the corporations in decline, things like providing water, power and other necessities, even for profit, were no longer priorities. As tensions grew towards civil unrest, fears of a major crackdown loomed, but with no one paying their salaries, Police and security forces were in no desire to maintain order. After all, they were all in the same boat. The Second Antroan Republic was on the verge of becoming a failed state. In the urban areas where the dominant corporation and collapsed, residents started to organise to provide for their own needs by taking over the abandoned facilities and getting them back up and running, as well as rebuilding their own local economies and linking up with other like minded areas doing the same.

The Corporations which survived the initial collapse, although drastically weakened, viewed themselves as creditors of the failed corporations and prepared to move into these areas. This invoked a stiff resistance from the residents of the areas who not only felt betrayed by their abandonment of the corporation in their area, but also felt that they had built something that belonged to them. Even the former security offices felt they were building towards something better in these new societies that they were now a part of, and refused the calls sign-on under another corporation. Instead, they remained with the other residents of these new "Free Sectors" to defend the areas from corporate incursions if necessary. The first such incursion came in the city of Shelby, into what had been known as Shelby Section 2 North. Government forces and the security forces of 'Apperath Holdings' quickly moved into the new Free Sector in the early morning hours before a resistance could be organised. By 8 am, the section appeared to be under Apperath control, but sporadic gunfire could be heard as residents awoke to what they viewed as an occupation. Attacks on government and Apperath Security Forces began with rocks and fire bombs being tossed here and there, mostly by students who would quickly retreat back into alleys and the occasional pot shot by people who could get their hands on gun. By 4 pm, the Security Forces had suffered 3 killed and 29 injured, while local residents had suffered about a dozen dead and 53 injured. By this time, Crowds had begun to form and were moving towards government and Apperath Security positions and began rioting. at 5:48 pm, one such confrontation resulted in Security forces firing into the crowed, killing around 75 people and injuring hundreds of others. The same scene occurred several times through the evening. By sunrise the next day, around 450 residents were dead and thousands more were injured and most of the crowds had dispersed. This became known as the First Battle of The Shelby North Free Sector. Sporadic resistance continued over the next several months in Shelby, but this was downplayed in propaganda broadcasts by Apperath and the other remaining corporations as a warning to the other Free Sectors. As world media turned to Shelby and the rest of Antroan, it became clear that an effective insurgency was building in Shelby. At the same time, the residents of the other Free Sectors were quietly supporting the insurgency in Shelby and receiving training in return. By the time the Second and Third Incursions occurred into the Free Sectors of Stanley and Girensey 1 A by the Pan-Antroan Corp, the residents of these areas had organised resistance capable of repelling the security forces, albeit at a high cost. Around this time, resistance began to grow from within Corporate controlled areas. in 2012, the Shelby insurgency had gone on the offensive and pushed Apperath out of Section 2 North in the Second Battle of The Shelby North Free Sector. Within a year, the remaining corporations were so unstable that they collapsed and their executives and government officials fleeing or were going into hiding. Without the support of the of the corporations and their security forces, the Government was forced to devolve itself in the face of massive demonstrations in the capital of Girensey and other cities.

Rebirth

After the dissolution of the The Second Antroan Republic, The Free Sectors reorganised themselves as a into a parliamentary democracy using proportional representation. A constitution developed enshrined progressive ideals and the duty to spread them whenever the opportunity arises, at home and abroad.

The Naval Arm of the Maslowniean Self Defence Force is Organised into The Home Fleet and the 2nd Fleet.

The Home Fleet consists of the 1st and Littoral Squadrons. 1st Squadron is responsible for the defence of Maslowniea's territorial waters and adjoining waters of strategic importance. The Littoral Squadron's responsibilities are closer to shore, with a focus on harbour and shoreline security, search and rescue and asserting sovereignty along Maslowoniea's outer islands and more remote coastal areas. The home fleet also maintains various aircraft which can carry out maritime patrols, search and rescue tasks, and attack missions.

Second Fleet's responsibility is to protect Maslowniea's interests around the world and to project power when the need arises. The Second Fleet is organised into three squadrons, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Squadrons. Each contains a mix of Destroyers, Frigates and support vessels, which will soon be joined by amphibious warfare ships and submarines. A long-term goal of the MSDF is to transfer a number of battalions from the Land Forces Arm to the Naval Arm, to create a Marine force under the command of the Navy.

The Naval Arm of the MSDF is currently studying the possibility of acquiring tactical nuclear weapons for last-ditch use against any hostile fleets which may approach it's shores.

The equipment inventory of the Naval Arm currently includes the following:
