The Stardust City of Mushy Pea is a massive, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 1.498 billion are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night. The national anthem is 'Popcorn' which is played via loudspeakers across the land on a regular basis.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 100%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Gambling.
Soldiers are slaughtered in their thousands due to lack of training, public loudspeakers constantly tell citizens they are "happy people", anti-environmentalist protesters are gunned down without mercy, and homeless people are periodically found dead upon altars to assorted deities. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Mushy Pea's national animal is the Totoro, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
