The following is a news brief sent out by the Mutant News Network:

HISTORY: Originally, Mutanatia was founded under Jack Sammon, in the year 2015. He is the first President to grace Mutanatia. The country was founded out of a war with people known as Venomians. Mutanatia was originally a colony of the Real-Life United States. Life under Jack Sammon was well-founded, with a constitution being wrought shortly after the Mutanatians, or Mutants as they lovingly refer to themselves, won their independence. However, it was not to last much longer.

Life under Jack Sammon: Jack Sammon did not do much as a president. He proposed various laws to be okayed by the Supreme Court Justice at the time, Mantis, and voted on by all the people in Mutanatia. His public approval ratings were in the uppers 80% rank, when he made his greatest mistake.

THE GREAT UNJUSTIFIABLE WAR: The biggest mistake Jack Sammon ever made was to enter into a war with the Venomians (led by John Merckian), who had invaded a neighboring country, known as Mutanfield. So, Jack Sammon invaded Mutanfield to drive out the Venomians. The deal was that if the Mutanatians were to succeed, Mutanfield would merge with Mutanatia. This violated an article in the Mutanatian constitution, that you cannot start a war if the primary motive is for gain. Jack Sammon would later be put on trial after he lost the next election to Mantis, found guilty of violating the constitution, and would be banished from politics, or would have had the next President, Mantis, not pardonned Sammon.

THE NEXT ELECTION: The next election, during the time Mutanatia was at war, was won in a land slide by Mantis, whose main platform was to end the war. Within a matter of 5-6 months, the war had ended, the Venomians, whose country is Venomia, were defeated, and life returned to normal. However, all was not to be good. Mantis promised Heinz Grumel, the new leader of Venomia due to a coup, that certain things would be met. The first and formost thing on the list is that various real-life countries were noticing that certain people had a gift of some sort that was running the risk of overturning the government of that country. They named and branded these people as mutants. Thus, and therefore, with Heinz Grumel putting on an unusual show of human rights, the main condition of the treaty was that $20,000,000US would be spent on welcoming these people totheir respective countries, with full rights. The only problem with this is that Mutanatia had accumulated $13M US in debt due to the war. With various charities donating money, a majority of the debt had been repaid, but if this debt was to go through as is, it woudl reflect badly on the President.

Life Under Mantis: Mantis is a better President than that of Jack Sammon. She readily heard people's pleas at the Audience Court, as well as passing a "Dying with Dignity" Bill that legalizes euthanasia. The bill passed with an approval rating of 60%, the highest ever recorded in Mutanatia. Mantis was repeatedly injured by people calling themselves Union Fighters, those who advocate the merging of Venomia and Mutanatia. They blew up a bridge in Mallumo, as well as destroyed a tavern. Mantis herself was burned externally once, forcing her to wear a jumpsuit and helmet for the rest of her life, and also injuring severely internally once. To this day, Mantis refuses to even recognize the Union Fighters. When Mantis was put into a coma so that her ribs could regenerate, Jack Harrow took over and promptly closed the audence courts, prompting a great reaction.

Present-Day As of right now, elections are being held for President. There are four candidates: Jack Harrow, whose ratings have slipped dramaticially ever since he closed the audience courts (he cannot even carry his own district); Teresa Sammon, the wife of Jack Sammon; Jack Sammon, who is running on a platform of warhawkery but also admitting past mistakes; and Mantis, who runs on a platform of the status-quo. This August, the election will be decided.

THE ELECTION OF 2017: For the first time ever, four candidates were battling each other for the seat. Additionally, for the first time ever, a candidate, Mantis's Supreme Court Justice, Jack Harrow, bowed out of the race.

POLITICS: The politics of Mutanatia are twofold, relying on all of the people of voting age (only they are truly counted as citizens...when a person living in Mutanatia reaches 18, he/she si then counted as a citizen) and that of the federal government. The federal government and its bureaucrats, as well as the President, are currently housed in the Green House, a 12-story high building that encompasses the audience courts, the bureaucrats, the President and Supreme Court Justice, and an eatery (from top-down order).

THE PRESIDENT The president resides on the third floor of the Green House. The current President being Mantis, the mutant mantis makes decisions based on the petitioners in the audience courts. She can also make alliances with other nations as well. Currently, the next president will go to a summit with the Venomians. No one knows what the summit will be about. The President keeps as his/her running mate the Supreme Court Justice. The President can ONLY propose laws. The President can also issue decrees that take place right away, but the Supreme Court Justice, as we will hear about in a moment, can strike them down as being unconstitutional.

THE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE The Supreme Court Justice is located on the fourth floor of the Green House, and is required to attend various meetings regarding upcoming laws. At these meetings, he/she can either okay a law to be passed into the public domain, or rule it unconstitutional. The same thing goes for decrees. He is informed of every law and decree the instant it happens, thereby being available to okay it or not. Most decress and laws take place during the afternoon.

THE VOTING BODY: THE CITIZENS The citizens, each and every one of them, decides on a law. Decrees are passed by the President, but laws, such as they "Dying with Dignity" Bill, are voted on directly by the citizens, either at designated voting places or by computer. To vote by computer, each citizen simply logs in with his/her unique username (Usually the last name followed by the first initial) and with his/her unique password that can be changed at will. Usually, the length for voting on the proposed law is about a week, while voting for a presidential election takes one month.

GIANT MANTISES: Giant Mantises are unique to the island. Anyone who is born with a cyst or having a deadly disease can go to Mutanatia for treatment, as mantis blood is used to fight all kinds of infection. THe reciever of the blood will get to be twice as strong as the average human being, plus grow antennae. The reciever of the blood as we will refer to him/her now, will be forced to wear a specialized helmet (customized to his or her liking, of course--or his/her parent's liking, depending on how old the person is) and suit (of any color). The major downside to this, of course, is that the person who is the donee can no longer live life outside the suit for more than 30 minutes. The luckier ones can and find out through experimentation, although this is not recommended. Another plus is that the reciever will have a life bond with his/her savior mantis, even though they are now classified as a mutant mantis. Giant Mantises are a protected species, but some people still hunt them for their valuable skin and blood. The species is completely sentient and can communicate through telepathy. They are also afforded citizen status in Mutanatia and can vote like the other, with specially altered computers/voting booths. Giant mantises are green in color, naturally, and their shape is that of a praying mantis, though the females are not known to devour their partner after mating, as they also have a human sense of attachment and love, as well as all other positive and negative aspects of human emotion. There are two groups of giant mantises who are important to every day life. They also walk upright, though this ability is taken away after they donate blood, forcing them to hop in great lengths to keep up with the others.

THE GIANT MANTIS ARMY: The giant mantis army guards the woods and the area near the Green House 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Its head is Mantidae, who has donated blood to Mantis, and who is not very intelligent. As a result, she frequently talks to Mantis, or whomever the President may be, and they call the shots. They basically patrol the area, looking for intruders or some such, but they are able to attack, and in hand-to-hand combat they are particulary deadly. They also have tailor-made weaponry, but when possible they opt not to use it. They also have their own aircraft, but they are extremely clumsy pilots. As a result, Mutanatia has a separate, human-led Army, Navy, and Air Force.

THE GIANT MANTIS PATROL: The giant mantis patrol guards important national landmarks, such as the Green House, or the National Reserve, among other places. They are dispatched only when the President deems it to be necessary. Its head is Mantitia, a mantis that even the wisest of humans consider to be wiser than they. Unfortunately, her wisdom is limited to knowledge of people. A bright side is that she can read the intentions of people before they opt to do anything. They also have tailor-made weaponry, but when possible they opt not to use it. The human patrol is beginning to be gradually phased out--it has become a sort of subgroup within the Mantis patrol--simply because the Mantises are much more effective patrollers than humans are.

There is talk of Mantis opening up a clinic whereby people can recieve blood donations from giant mantises for a small price. They number in the millions, and are mainly located in district A, Mantis's home district.
