A tolerant, muilticultural, left-leaning democracy, N Y C has been a vocal member of the world community and is widely respected for its humanitarian efforts.

A brief Overview

The Metropolitan Republic of N Y C is a massive, socially progressive nation, noted for its excellent enviromental quality. Its compassionate, intelligent and evver-growing population love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be acedemically strong and encourage debate, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion, although this has decreased in recent years.

The government is very large but quite efficient, and tends to heavily support Education, Social Welfare, and the Environment. The average income tax rate is high, and tax laws reflect the long-held belief in the wealthy's responsibilities to work for the common good. A fast-growing and healthy private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Geography

N Y C is an island nation made up of two large landmasses and many smaller ones. The climate is mostly temperate but terrain and temperature vary widely across the nation, contributing to it's exceptional diversity of cultures and creatures.

Society and Culture

Due to it's multiple waves of immigration, N Y C has an incredibly varied culture that shows the marks of a variety of influences. Food tends to be heavy in herbs and seafood. Education is viewed as of the highest importance, and schools are fast paced but tend to utilize very liberal and modern teaching methods. Museums, reading, orchestras and all other intellectual persuits are very popular. Conversely, N Y C teams have had only middling success at sports competitions. Society is very open and liberal and there is barely any conflict despite being one of the most diverse places on earth; in fact, most people in N Y C have an average of 3 different ethnicities in their backround.

Religion

Religion Statistics: 13% Greek Polytheism, 14% Hinduism, 10% Catholicism, 22% Islam, 23% Judaism, 2% Protestantism, 10% Buddhism, 4% other, 2% Atheism. Seperation of church and state is a cornerstone of N Y C government, and religion rarely influences government rulings. Religious institutions tend to be, but are not always, much more progressive then average and fundamentalist versions of any of the religions are practically non-existant. The populace as a whole is very secular, and roughly 55-60% of N Y C citizens identify themselves as non-practicing, although a much larger number take interest in their religious heritage. Religious institutions pay taxes, although they may be mild to moderately reduced depending on the State.

Government

Executive

Executive power rests in the hands of the president, who is elected to a 3 year term and can be elected no more than three times. He has the power to appoint advisors, cabinet members, ambassadors and the like, all of which must be approved by the Upper House of Congress.

Legislative

The congress consists of an Upper House, consisting of two Senators from each state, and a Lower House, made of of district representatives. Senators are elected for a maximum of 3 5 year terms, while Representatives are elected for a maximum 3 4 year terms.

Judicial

Judges are elected on every level but the Supreme Court for 15 year terms. Supreme Court Justices are appointed for 40 years by the president but must be approved by congress and voted for by at least 1/3 of the country. All Supreme Court Justices can be voted out of office if at least 70% of the population vote for it.

Territorial Organization

N Y C is made up of 9 States, the Federal District surrounding the capital Sdarjata and various other holdings, mostly islands far away from N Y C. The latter have some degree of statehood but are more directly governed by the federal government. States have a good deal of power, but are subservient to the national government and may not engage in foreign relations without the federal government's involvment.

History

Uninhabited for millenia, N Y C proved a safe harbor for an amazing number and variety of immigrants, who by and large prospered. The first people to arrive in N Y C were lost Greek settlers bound for Asia Minor. They landed on Iskandia and Hellakai in the 5th century BCE,and maintained contact with Greece for centuries until the collapse of the Roman Empire . To this day, exemplary classical architecture can be found in these areas, especially in the old capital of Hellakai

The next wave came much later, in the 500s, when explorers from various empires in India came seeking trade and new contacts for the wealthy emperor they served. The Hindus set up several trading outposts in the south, the largest of which surrounded Lake Vadranesh. Several large Hindu temples with ceremonial ghats, or steps leading down to the waters of the lake can be seen even now. Most of the south coast however, and the adjacent isle of Kwan Yin, was primarily Buddhist and has some of the most beautiful shrines and stupas in the world.

N Y C's society was shaken once again in the mid 1200s when Muslims fleeing the Mongol invasion of the Middle East arrived in N Y C's south. Much as they did in Spain, the Arabs breathed new life into the communities they joined by introducing several achievements in science, mathematics and medicine. The wealth they garnered in trade with the Islamic empire help fund a rich culture, more liberal than that of their mainland counterparts.

Just when the Islamic culture began to become firmly rooted in the south, the last pre-industrial wave of immigration, Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal, arrived around the end of the 15th Century. This was the first time western Europeans, or Jews, had settled in N Y C; they brought with them another complex cultural fabric that slowly wove itself into the vibrant tapestry that is N Y C. They too built a large network of trading cities dispersed throughout the land, some of which today have stunnning late medieval/early renaissance architecture, particularly large Synogouges.

By 1600, efforts by the European powers, particularly Spain, England and France, to colonize N Y C began in earnest. The different factions of N Y C realized precautions must be taken, and in 1612 a referendum for all land-holding males was held to decide if the different principalities, republics, dictatorships etc. should join one unified N Y C. Most states accepted under threat of blockades and invasions, but several regions held out. Due to the defensibility of some of the hold outs, combined with the fact that the new union was really a weak federation that made raising armies difficult, N Y C did not fall under the jurisdiction of one government until 1704.

In the 1930s, many supporters of the Republic in Spain fled to N Y C. They bolstered the influence of the Spanish language and today are found throughout the country, especially in large cities. This influx helped bring about the distinctive "Cristal y Sol" style that N Y C of the 40s and 50s became famous for.

N Y C was a large material supporter of the Allies during WWII under President Aditya although did not have the military capabilities to do much except defend their territory and protect their convoys to Europe. N Y C was the third largest eventual settlment point of refugees from the war, mostly from Italy, Poland and Lithuania. About 78% were Jews, of whom most were evacuated by N Y C humanitarian agencies in the weeks leading up to the war. N Y C was a vocal supporter of the creation of Israel, which even most muslims, angered at the Grand Mufti for his admiration of Hitler, Nazi collaberation, violent actions and his refusal to compromise on the creation of Israel, supported. Although, as with anything else, N Y C certainly speaks its mind when it does not agree with something, the nation to this day is a close ally of Israel.

N Y C was ruled under a sucession of unnoteworthy governments for the next few decades. The notable exception was the Calerfar government of 1957-1962 and again in 1965. Under his leadership, N Y C's trading network was used to full measure to bring vast riches to the nation. He also instituted the strong environmental policies that continue to provide N Y C with a large tourism industry.

Unfortunately, a stock market crash in the mid 80s sent N Y C's economy on a downward spiral. The country bounced back under strong leadership in the next decade, but was not quite ready for the ensuing conflict, The War of the Unknown Attacker, that severly threatened its return to trading eminence. However, as the fighting was contained within the area of Isla del Bosque Grande, and was efffectively a victory for N Y C, the boost it gave the manufacturing industy was the war's only real effect.

N Y C was a major participant in the international space program in Northern Sushi, and as such was attacked by The Gray Legions and The Black Katanas, plunging the normally peaceful nation into a horrible war.

The nation suffered greatly from biological and nuclear attacks, but little fighting happened inside its territory, and almost all of that was naval.

Resolved to try to avert similar disasters, N Y C and the other Allied Powers, Xeraph and Comatica, refounded GAPTS: The Grand Alliance of Peace Through Strength, and at this time continues to work on the formation and growth of the organization
