The nation known as the Democratic People's Republic of New Hawking has developed rapidly over time, from the small protectorate it once was into the successful left-wing power that exists today. Its citizens enjoy extensive personal freedom, high quality social services and great economic security.
It efficiently leads the group of nations known as the Hawking Commonwealth -- which includes the Progressive Dominion of Hawking and the Gay Vengeance of 2 Gryphon -- having superseded its parent state in this position.
New Hawking was founded in early 2004, largely as an experiment in creating a left-wing economy stronger than that of the original nation, Hawking. Progressive and intelligent nationalistic economic policies have ensured that this goal has been achieved. The nation's still-growing economy has now far surpassed that of the parent state, and has shattered the expectations that most Hawkingers held at the beginning of the experiment.
Despite the fact that for the most part, government policy reflects the nation's liberal roots, the New Hawking Democratic Socialist Party has pursued a slightly more authoritarian approach to social policy than LibSoc did in Hawking. This has resulted in a much higher standard of law and order emerging in New Hawking, and the development of an enviable military force that is prepared to defend the Commonwealth should the need ever arise.
The government's leading priorities include: the even distribution of wealth to ensure that all citizens receive equal living standards; environmental protection so that future generations may enjoy the natural wonders of New Hawking, including the endangered two-tailed fox; and perhaps most importantly, the continuation of a world-class free education system. Leftside University is known to have turned out some of the most compassionate, sensible and open minds in the world. Meanwhile, defence is rapidly becoming a more important priority for New Hawking on an increasingly turbulent international stage.
One problem that New Hawking is currently being forced to confront is the hugely high rate of unemployment. It's believed that a progressive relaxation of regulations in the areas of business and commerce will help to combat this.
