The Oglethorpian Regional Militia is an all-volunteer reserve force called to duty in wartime or extreme emergency. The existance of the Regional Militia follows the more formal Oglethorpian Colonial Army by only a few years. Its estimated numbers are somewhere around 2,255,270 (or roughly 1/10th of a percent of the population). Based on the growing popularity of town militias, the Regional Militia unified them into a single force; both bringing them under government mandate and directing their actions more effectively.

Modern role

While the Regional Militia used to be a strong insurance policy against foreign threats, that role has diminshed significantly with the era of peace Oglethorpia has been in for the last half century. Now it provides manpower to assist and help to remedy emergency situations such as riots, natural disasters or whatever the situation may be.

Membership

When obtaining a drivers license (at earliest, age 17) citizens are offered the ability to volunteer for the Oglethorpian Regional Militia in return for slight tax refunds.

Applying for volunteer membership in the Regional Militia extends the time of recieving a formal licence by an additional month, allowing time for extensive background checks and psychological examination (based on prior records) to ensure the enlistment of responsible individuals.

As a side effect of its detailed examination of Regional Militia prospects, a side effect of the program has been to expose psychologically volatile individuals.

After the extra month of waiting, the citizen recieves his/her drivers license with appropriate recognition of fitness for militia service. Those denied certification simply do not recieve the Regional Militia's seal of approval on their licenses.

It is estimated that 95% of applicants are given permission.

Organization

The Defense Bureau is in sole control of the Regional Militia at all times. Only it makes the "call to arms" for the militia to be armed and prepared for urban warfare. Occasionally, under mandate of the Defense Bureau, control of Regional Militia manpower is relinquished to lower agencies for brief periods of time in case of emergency.

As far as tactics and strategy go, the Defense Bureau has not formed a rigid structure; typically, Regional Militia members are expected to treat full-fledged Aggregated Army soldiers as their superiors and obey general stationing directions.

Primarily, however, it is the Civil Service branch of the Aggregated Armed Forces distributes most commands; being in charge of the weaponry of the organization, they are in the best position to offer general mobilization guidelines to militia members. While not committed to foreign involvement, the Civil Service acts simply as more formally trained militia men (just tied to the formal Aggregated Armed Forces). See below for more information on the Civil Service's management of the militia.

It is widely understood that were war to come to the heart of Oglethorpian cities, coordination of assets would not be a high priority, but the actual resistance to foreign invaders itself (organization logistics which would be difficult anyways).

Equipment

The Oglethorpian Regional Militia recieves the newly outdated generation of Aggregated Army weapons; most recently, this has consisted of the WESM-G3 submachine gun, used body armor and salvaged machine gun setups (scrapped from recycled Zapner 3 tanks).

Oddly enough, due to little change in grenade design in the past few decades, the Regional Militia and Aggregated Army use a grenade of the same quality.

Upkeep

To maintain the readyness of the Regional Militia at all times, bi-monthly drills are held. These are staggered so that eventually all 2,255,270 registered Regional Militia members are refreshed in training four times a year, while not interrupting the daily business of the nation with military drills.

All submachine guns and other weapons are in heavy lockdown in Regional Militia Arms Facilities; these are operated and guarded by Civil Service members of the Aggregated Armed Forces. These men and women are formally trained in combat and expected to direct Regional Militia efforts, actually participating in fighting and offering last minute guidelines in weapon operation.

The Civil Service is in charge of maintaining the Regional Militia Arms Facilities because of tight gun control laws, and desire to keep the weaponry under federal jurisdiction to ensure their quality. This ensures upkeep, as well as enforcing the national policy of keeping weapons in responsible hands.

Benefits

Volunteers to the Oglethorpian Regional Militia are offered tax breaks for their committment to the nation. Defense Bureau statistics have placed monetary motivation and national pride as 60/40 in reasoning for volunteering for the Regional Militia.
