Lying between Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands (Japan), it has been recorded that people migrated from both sides of the archipalego at least 4000 years ago, mainly to the largest island. The people are known as Gweridijongians and had their own dialects, the most popular being Nejid - which sounds like a mix of today's Japanese, Chinese and Polynesian. The main island and the surrounding smaller islands were known to the Japanese as Cold Bays Islands (Romanji: Wan Rei To; Kanji: 湾玲島; Hiragana: わん れい と). The people led simple lives as fishermen.

English explorers, led by Sir Rangoon Sentar, stumbled onto the island in 1785 whilst looking for new lands to expand the English Empire. They settled in the south-western area and named the island Doronaland, after the central mountain (Mt. Dorona) that seperated them and the natives. In the next few centuries, the new settlers expanded from their original port town and by the 1850s, the total acquired area was present-day One Red Dot, excluding Gweridijongya and Shusan Islands. Agreements with the original Chinese owners allowed the English to take over the land and rule without any foreign bureaucracy.

History

Lying between Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands (Japan), it has been recorded that people migrated from both sides of the archipalego at least 4000 years ago, mainly to the largest island. The people are known as Gweridijongians and had their own dialects, the most popular being Nejid - which sounds like a mix of today's Japanese, Chinese and Polynesian. The main island and the surrounding smaller islands were known to the Japanese as Wan Rei To (Kanji: 湾玲島; Hiragana: わん れい と).

In the next few centuries, the new settlers expanded from their original port town and by the 1850s, the total acquired area was practically 75% of the entire island. Agreements with the original Chinese owners allowed the English to take over the land and rule without any foreign bureaucracy. At this point, present-day One Red Dot was now in three parts.

After 136 years of rule, in 1921, England lost the Nippon-Anglo War and Doronaland was ceded to the Japanese, which was to be returned 50 years later in 1971 in accordance with the Treaty of Baneberra. The Japanese renamed the island Minatomachi (Kanji: 港町; Hiragana: みなとまち) and tried to establish their way of life and with much success. Meanwhile, Gweridijongya had become quite prosperous and in 1951, Wan Rei To had been renamed Shusan Islands.

In 1971, Japan returned Doronaland to the English but as the people had become sick of being passed around, they demanded independence from the English. English refusal caused a major breakdown between both sides and constant rioting caused the island to enter an economic slump. In 1987, England relented but only if Doronaland were to become a self-governing state of Gweridijongya, which had turned into a relatively strong territory. The people agreed in a referendum.

Due to many reasons and factors, Gweridijongya and Doronaland decided to merge as one nation in 2003. Together with the Shusan Islands, they decided to use One Red Dot as their name, a misheard translation of the islands that lined the main island's south-eastern shore. The Japanese flag was adopted in honour of giving the people the inspiration and strength that led to independence. The land's population reached 4 billion citizens on 13 January 2005 and reached 5 billion on 1 July 2005.
