General Information

The Interdependent Territories of One Red Dot (Japanese: 一つ赤い点の相互依存の領域; Romanji: Hitotsu Akai Ten no Sougoizon no Ryōiki; Chinese: 一红点相互依赖国; Pinyin: Yì Hóng Diăn Xiāng Hù Yī Lài Guó; Nejid: Si Kahi'd Diad zon Siaagu Yirez Gok) - or One Red Dot (Japanese: 一つ赤い点; Romanji: Hitotsu Akai Ten; Chinese: 一红点; Pinyin: Yì Hóng Diăn; Nejid: Si Kahi'd Diad) is a relatively small nation in the South China Sea. The people lead relatively peaceful lives and is also quite neutral in many international affais. However, the government has been been struggling with the country's economy ever since the union of its former three parts, thus making it quite weak, and usually always in need of foreign aid.

History

Lying between Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands (Japan), it has been recorded that people migrated from both sides of the archipalego at least 4000 years ago, mainly to the largest island. The people were (and still are) known as Gweridijongians. They had their own dialects, the most popular being Nejid - which sounds like a mix of today's Japanese, Chinese and various Polynesian languages. The main island was known by the locals as Gweridijongya. However, by others, the main island and the surrounding smaller islands were known to the Chinese as Liong-wan Dou (冷湾岛; Pinyin: Lěng Wān Dăo), and to the Japanese as Wan Rei To (Kanji: 湾冷島; Hiragana: わん れい と). The people led simple lives as fishermen.

English explorers, led by Sir Rangoon Sentar, stumbled onto the island in 1785 whilst looking for new lands to expand the British Empire. They settled in the south-western area and named the island Doronaland, after the central mountain - which they called Mt. Dorona - that separated them and the natives. In the next few decades, the new settlers expanded from their original port town. By the 1850s, the total acquired area was almost three-quaters of the island. Agreements with the original Chinese owners allowed the English to take over the land and rule freely.

At this point, present-day One Red Dot was now in three distinct parts: Doronaland which consisted 75% of the main island, Gweridijongya which consisted the remaining 25% of the island, and the remaining Chinese-held islands of Liong-wan Dou.

After 136 years of rule, in 1921, England lost the Nippon-Anglo War and Doronaland was ceded to the Japanese, which was to be returned 50 years later in 1971 in accordance with the Treaty of Baneberra. The Japanese renamed the island Minatomachi (Kanji: 港町; Hiragana: みなとまち; lit.: port town). They established their way of life with much success. Meanwhile, Gweridijongya had become quite prosperous. Also, further on in 1951, Liong-wan Dou had been renamed Shusan Islands.

In 1971, Japan returned Doronaland to the English. However, the people had become frustrated in being passed around, and so demanded independence from the English. English refusal caused a major breakdown between both sides and constant rioting caused the colony nation to enter an economic slump. In February 1987, England relented but only if Doronaland were to become a self-governing state of the still prosperous Gweridijongya. The people agreed in a referendum.

Due to many reasons and factors, including the 1997 Asian Currency Crisis, Gweridijongya and Doronaland decided to merge as a single nation in 2003. Together with the Shusan Islands, they decided to use One Red Dot as their name, the popular misheard old Japanese name of the islands by the then English settlers. The Japanese flag was adopted in honour of giving the people the inspiration and strength that led to independence.

The land's population has been steadily growing, reaching 4 billion citizens on 13 January 2005, 5 billion on 1 July 2005, 6 billion on 19 December 2005, and 7 billion on 1 July 2006.
