The Paradise of PORLD is a huge, safe nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 939 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Defence and Education are secondary priorities. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 69%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology, Retail, and Gambling industries.
Nudity is frowned upon, a massive campaign is underway to ensure the PORLDian race remains pure, religious organizations are being forced to leave the country or pay income taxes like everybody else, and a National Academy regulates grammar and usage. Crime is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. PORLD's national animal is the nerd, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the GEM.
